Footy Tragic
Article #2 – ‘The Appeal of the Cheap Journeyman’
Dear Footy Tragics,
As we all dissect player prices and positions for season 2010 it’s time to talk strategy. When carefully constructing our squad of 30 players, there are some common traps that many dreamteamers fall into. One of these traps is what I call, “The appeal of the cheap journeyman”.
We’ve all fallen for this one in previous seasons, the discarded reject who was going cheap and about to kick start his career at another club. As the discarded reject embarked on his 6th pre season campaign, he told reporters on a hot February night: “I feel like I’m 18 again and I’m as fit as I’ve ever been. I can’t wait for the season to start so I can prove to my old club that I belong at this level”. While a new club can be just the change a player needs to reinvigorate himself, you need to be very careful. This is particularly important where the player at his new club is “bargain priced”.
The players I’m referring to this season are: Andrew Raines ($218,200 defender), Xavier Clark ($168,500 defender / midfielder) and Matt Maguire ($101,700 defender). I’ve received many questions about these three players already, with many dreamteams keen to add some experienced players into their side at a “bargain price”.
The problem I see is that Raines had six years at Richmond, while Maguire and Clarke both had eight years at St. Kilda. If you can’t prove yourself as an accomplished AFL player in six years or more, it’s time to face the fact that you’re not good enough. While all three players have had more than their fair share of injuries over the journey, they have also had ample time in the AFL system to make an impact.
You might argue that Raines and Clarke were not discarded by their previous clubs, but when exchanging players for pick 40 or higher in a thin draft, the message is clear that they were no longer required.
My advice is to look forward rather than back. We’ve all heard of the term “youth policy” and it’s my core strategy. Brad Sheppard from West Coast looks a very likely type and what’s more, he’s a defender! Need a cheap forward, then why not give Luke Tapscott from Melbourne or Tom Lynch from St. Kilda a chance? As for midfielders, you don’t need my advice because there is an abundance of quality kids to choose from.
Personally, I’d prefer to take a punt on an 18 or 19 year old kid with huge potential and upside, rather than flog a dead horse.
Good luck!

every time you guys release a daily post i have to go and rethink my team.
how about some guys a little bit more expensive, i’m thinking of guys like Josh Hunt, Rick Ladson, Jesse Smith, Austin Wonnamirri (no idea how to spell that), Beau Waters etc. All of these guys seem like safer options, particularly Ladson & Hunt, but is it worth paying $200+ for someone with an injury cloud?
Nice to hear from you Cecil.
We always love getting new dreamteamers commenting on our site.
I’d steer well clear of all those players you mentioned due to serious injury concerns over all of them.
While players like Hunt, Ladson and Waters are all very capable AFL players, all three are coming from a long way back due to injuries.
Don’t underestimate the importance of durability, the 8th wonder of the world.
Jesse w may be back playing Footy by mid year, so he is a no. Ladson had issues with BOTH his knees last year and is still not is full training and waters is under a similar injury cloud… I’m looking at Kennelly, broadbent and Henderson- none with injury concerns, and all with great amount of improvement in them! It is soooo hard to avoid these players who seem like bargains, but it’s not always worth the risk… I spent about five hours today doing research for Footy tragic, and looked very very closely at those players u mentioned and I have decided not to pursue any of them unless they prove me wrong in the nab cup
Great article Ben. I have definitely been one to fall in this trap from seasons passed. However, depending on their pricetag, I don’t mind having the odd “cheap journeyman” trying to resurrect his career at another club, purely to use him as bench cover only though. Having Zac Dawson on my pine last year proved a master-stoke for me as the kid ended up playing 20 games and avg around 50 but was rookie priced and it meant I didn’t have to agonise about relying on spuds like Petrenko when one of my other defenders didn’t come up… this is why I’m hoping guys like Matt Maguire can be used to similar effect this year considering Vossy gives him consistent games. But yes, I definitely wouldn’t go near any of the guys mentioned for any other reason.. The only guy that sparks my interest at the moment that would fall into this category is Simon Buckley. What are you thoughts?..
Simon Buckley is an interesting one. He is certainly cheap and capable of scoring well, but I’m not sure he is in Collingwood’s best 22.
Buckley is good at winning the ball, but not great at getting it to a teammate. Monitor his NAB cup form closely.
