Searching For A Mid Priced Keeper
Dear Footy Tragics,
Nick Riewoldt’s serious hamstring injury has hit dreamteam coaches around the country right between the eyes. The inspirational St. Kilda skipper is not only the focal point in the Saints forward line, he is also the focal point of 148,449 dreamteam forward lines. With an expected recovery time ranging from 8 - 16 weeks, the one thing we can be certain of is the need to use one of our 20 valuable trades to take Riewoldt out.
Many dreamteam coaches have taken advantage of price freezes prior to Round 3 to “fix up” their initial squad of 30 players. While these trades are a necessity for many teams, the reality is that these coaches are now left with 17 or 18 trades and they are competing with teams who still have 20 trades up their sleeve.
The most valuable dreamteam player is one that you originally pick up as a cash cow or value pick, who subsequently turns into a keeper. Mitch Clark, Jack Grimes and Greg Broughton were the perfect examples in 2009.
I’ve spoken previously about Clark, the Brisbane ruckman who started the 2009 season priced at $217,800 after averaging 49 points per game in 2008. History tells us that Clark went on to average 94 points per game in 2009, thus becoming a valuable keeper rather than the value selection he was at the beginning of the year.
I’m using Clark as the perfect example of the player we need to find in 2010. We cannot afford 22 premiums in the early part of the season, so we need to uncover those mid priced bargains that have the potential to become valuable keepers (thus saving us valuable trades in the process)!
I’ve set myself the task of selecting two unique (thus ruling out Nick Malceski) mid priced bargains who have the potential to become valuable keepers. I’ve also kept away from midfielders, because everyone already knows about Jack Trengove and Dustin Martin. The two players I have chosen are:
- Heath Grundy - Sydney - Defender / Forward, currently in 10,317 teams
- Current average 96 points per game - Starting price $287,400, Current price $316,500;
- James Gwilt - St. Kilda - Defender / Forward, currently in 8,550 teams
- Current average 87 points per game - Starting price $249,600, Current price $278,800.
I talked up Grundy in one of my pre season articles and he has been super impressive in the first three rounds. Grundy is now a key member of the Swans defence and he is fast establishing himself as one of the most improved players in the competition. Grundy seems to be playing in a similar mould to Nathan Bock, who has been a premium dreamteam defender for many years now. Like Bock, Grundy not only shuts down opposition key forwards, he also racks up plenty of disposals and marks in the process, which is perfect for dreamteam!
Gwilt has been a big surprise in 2010 and I still have my doubts as to whether he can continue his impressive early season form. Having said that, Gwilt has always been a talented player, with a lack of consistency being his biggest problem. The absence of Nick Riewoldt may help Gwilt, as the Saints midfielders will need to become less predictable and look to other targets in their forward line. While Sam Fisher appears likely to fill the now vacant Centre Half Forward position, Gwilt has strong hands and is a more than useful second or third forward marking option.
Gwilt would have been stung after playing 15 games in 2009 and being left out of all three of the Saints finals. Now in his 6th season of AFL footy, maybe the penny has finally dropped. It seems like Gwilt has been around forever, but he is still only 23. With 44 AFL games under his belt, he could be set for a break out season in 2010!
I must warn you here that selecting mid priced players can be fraught with danger, as often there are more misses than hits. However, if you do your homework and have a good basis for choosing a particular player, don’t be afraid to take a risk and pull the trigger. If you do, you may find yourself an expected keeper, which allows you to use that saved trade to pick up another premium.
Good luck!

I dare say Grundy will not be so unique as of Friday’s lockout. A lot of coaches that already have Brown are talking Rioli or Grundy as their Roo replacement. I still need Brown, though, and am leaning towards stinginess when it comes to my trading strategy - may regret it as I did when missing out on Clark and jumping on Broughton after the first price rise, last year.
haha damn… I’m trading Roo for Gwilt. I think it consolidates his spot and could provide nice opportunity for him to play as a sweeper/rebounder in the backline when goddard or fisher go forward. Always liked him and he seems grown up now when I see him in action. I am not selecting him as a keeper, but moreso a cash cow. however i am open to that occurring - i need to upgrade tippett urgently.
Yeah - as a Saints fan, i have been an on-again off-again fan/sceptic of Gwilt’s ever since his first game. He was initially plucked from absolute obscurity, so he was always going to take a while to come good.
The news of Sam Fisher moving to CHF (although i reckon he will still spend stints in the backline) will be great for Gwilt. Gwilt already proved in the first two weeks that he can cover Fisher’s role very well. He has finally learnt how to use his big body to his advantage (has had some private training from Archer!) and his confidence really looks to be going up, meaning his teammates are using him more and more when rebounding from defence.
My only main worry if what will happen if the likes of Raph Clarke and Jesse Smith can forge their way into the lineup? Clarke has earned his name playing as a rebounding defender, however i prefer to see him forward of centre (and i have a sneaking suspicion we will see him come into the team this week and play on a HFF). However, if he does play down back, that means the likes of Gwilt may have to play a more defensive role (Raph really struggles to defend AND rebound). Also, Jesse Smith may be closer than some think - he is nearly back to full training and it could be only a couple of weeks until he lines up at Sandy… Word is that if all goes to plan, he could have his chance in the seniors by round 10-ish…
But, a lot of this is being speculative - Roo IS a big loss and Lyon will spend the next few weeks playing different players at different ends of the ground to see how each adapt. The Saints pride themselves on their versatility and that, in the end of the day, is what will help them overcome Riewoldt’s loss. I expect to see all of Goddard, Fisher, Gwilt, Clarke, Gilbert and even Dawson (in poor form down back) tried in the forward line over the next few weeks. Time will tell who will be the major DT beneficiary, however i believe that Gwilt is probably the most likely to continue his improvement.
On a similar note, if we look at possible rookie inclusions for the Saints, my money would be on one of Stanley, Heyne, or even an elevation of Gaertner (who really impressed down back in the pre-season). Unfortunately Tom Lynch is injured, as he would be the most appropriate inclusion down forward.
If Gwilt keeps going up in value til R10 and loses his spot/whatever he should be a high enough value to almost straight swap to a premium. Very interesting. Thought Stanley would get a gig with Kosi out… will he now Riewoldt is out? good time to blood the kid. he will be a gun
The kid is good but very raw. Due to his body shape and size, it would be hard for him to permanently hold down a key position, especially as the sole focus up forward. I see him more as a very tall forward pocket…
This week i am expecting to see McEvoy’s inclusion (this will allow him and Gardiner to rotate through CHF) and one of Jack Steven, Rhys Stanley or Raph Clarke. Steven was BOG for Sandy on the weekend, but it was only his first game back from injury. I feel that he too will be a star one day! He is only 19!
Stanley could slot in nicely, but i feel that Ross would prefer to play senior players as gap-fillers than blood the kids. His goal is for a premiership, not a rising star… That is not to say we wont see any Saint debuts this year (i expect we will see all of Stanley, Heyne and Lynch at some point!), but it wont be a priority. Steven is probably the most likely candidate to cement a spot on a HFF.
Just wanted to say well done on the new sections in the webpage. A big improvement and give the reader heaps of valuable info…..cheers
Toby no worries about last week. We all love fantasy football, but, I love footy much more but I now get where you were coming from. Rooy going down was kinda ironic though wasnt it haha…cheers again and keep up the good work guys
