Footy Tragic
Article #6 – Leaving No Stone Unturned
Dear Footy Tragics,
Round 1 is now just 15 days away and we only get one more look at our players before locking them into our starting squad of 30. With a limit of only 20 trades over 22 rounds, the importance of nailing our squad of 30 players prior to Round 1 cannot be underestimated. In an ideal world, our trades should be used to cover for injuries, rather than to cover for poor player choices at the selection table.
The best advice I can give you to help nail your squad of 30 players is to conduct your own thorough research. Personally, I prefer to stick to the mainstream media and Footy Tragic to obtain information on my players. The AFL website is useful for this purpose, as is The Herald Sun and The Age if you reside in Victoria. If you live outside Victoria, I understand it can be difficult to obtain information on interstate teams. For example, the WA media focus almost exclusively on West Coast and Fremantle, and the SA media focus on Adelaide and Port Adelaide. Fortunately, this problem is now largely overcome given the fact most articles are now available online.
While the information you obtain from these sources is invaluable, as an old school footy lover, I refuse to pick any players in my dreamteam unless I have seen them myself (either live at the ground or on TV). Personally, watching a player once is not enough for me, I prefer to see my player in action at least two to three times before locking him in.
The problem here is many of the bargain buys we are all searching for play for struggling teams such as Richmond or Melbourne, with both of these teams knocked out of the NAB cup in Round 1. With no TV coverage of NAB challenge matches, we are left with only one option, watch these games live.
With NAB challenge games this weekend at: Southport, Visy Park, Narrandera, Fremantle, Casey Fields, Morwell and Mount Gambier, most of us have the option of watching at least one NAB challenge match this weekend (unless you live in Adelaide or Tasmania)!
I’ll be heading out to Visy Park, Melbourne this Friday afternoon to check out the Carlton vs Adelaide match. My main focus will be on players such as Marcus Davies from Carlton ($89,500 defender) and Phil Davis from Adelaide ($94,500 defender / forward). Both of these players are currently in the mix for me, but given the fact I have hardly seen them play, I want to check them out first hand.
Watching NAB challenge games live may seem too extreme for your liking, but its all part of the due diligence required when selecting your initial squad of 30 players. I consider it a one percenter, which could be the one percent advantage you gain over your opponents this season.
Analysing player stats is a very important component of dreamteam, but it is no substitute for watching players with your own eyes. Avoid the temptation to take short cuts with your dreamteam, because as the saying goes “there are no shortcuts to any place worth going”.
Good luck!

Good points, and would have been nice if Port Adelaide could get a game within 500KM of their home base. regardless, 5 hour drive there and then 5 horus back to mount gambier is probably a little more than i can afford to spend.
Marcus Davies is certainly one to keep an eye on, Webberley is another i want to see but can’t unfortunately. please let me know how you think Davies goes.
SHHHHH re:davies.
should be at visy park friday. haven’t seen the blue boys run around live yet this season.
Not sure about the AFL site for quality info!
Come on Dan, don’t act like Wayne Schwass didn’t provide you relevant, team changing priceless information…
Any of you guys thinking of using MPP rule this year?
Was not going to use it at all this year but have re-though my options and considering using it to cover for injuries
The AFL site does NOT have any useful DT tips or DT advice, but it does have some brilliant information for us.
I’m a big fan of watching the coaches post game press conferences on the AFL website. The coaches are often asked about their thoughts on young players. There is no better way to determine how likely the youngster is to play in the seniors than asking the senior coach himself!
Dlow, I think I’ll trade into the dual position rule if I use it at all. I’ve got plenty of forwards and backs who are mid eligible (not by design, a lot of my picks just happen to be mid eligible as well).
I’m hoping Mitch Farmer doesn’t start the year with Richmond, but comes in later. He’d be a great midfield downgrade, who is also back eligible. Trading him into the mids would allow good flexibility. Couldn’t start him in the mids if he was playing Round 1 though. Too much choice there!
It’s a rule that should only affect your team later in the year when you’re trying to cover for injuries, so I don’t think there’s a pressing need to go all out on this rule from Round 1, but just have it in the back of your mind as you start trading.
I’m going to pick 1 multi position midfielder. To cover for a forward.
Strategy is that I want to conserve my trades during the 1st 8-10 weeks until I can cash in my rookies and start upgradding my team. My concern is the lack of reliable forward and back rookies and that if i get an injury that I might be forced to make a trade to avoid a doughnut.
The particular player in question is Higgins. This also allows me a much larger range of players that I can use if someone gets injured in the forward line or midfield as I could park my injured player in the forward or backline
The only downside I see is that I don’t get any injuries to the forwards or midfield and that i’ve wasted a position that I could have used to upgrade to a Swan or Ablett. If thats the only downside I’m happy to accept it.
There are not many quality Back/Mid options that I’m happy with so I’m not going there.
Any thoughts?
Best Back/Mids would be Goddard, Hodge and Kelly (Kelly will be back in the midfield this year)… Even Gram is looking very good this year! I have toyed with Goddard in my midfield as one of my premiums, but i just feel dirty doing it! lol
And does anyone want to help me with some match reports for the NAB praccy games this weekend!? ;-)
i.e. If you go to one, id LOVE to hear what your thoughts are of key players etc which i could then include in my Monday article.
I’ve got Carlton vs Adelaide covered. Is anyone else going to any of the other NAB challenge games this weekend?
