Footy Tragic
Round 6
Don’t forget to check out the final Tuney’s Tuition from this morning – Tuney looks at the best Captain theories
WESTERN BULLDOGS v ST KILDA
Western Bulldogs
B: Jarrod Harbrow, Brian Lake, Dale Morris
HB: Ryan Hargrave, Tom Williams, Lindsay Gilbee
C: Nathan Eagleton, Daniel Cross, Andrejs Everitt
HF: Robert Murphy, Mitch Hahn, Brad Johnson
F: Daniel Giansiracusa, Barry Hall, Jason Akermanis
Foll: Ben Hudson, Ryan Griffen, Adam Cooney
I/C: Dylan Addison, Jarrad Grant, Shaun Higgins, Jordan Roughead
Emg: Matthew Boyd, Josh Hill, Easton Wood
In: Hargrave
Out: Brodie Moles (ankle)
- Disappointing to see Moles come out of the side, especially after scoring his first ton last week. Hargrave comes into his place, which will hopefully see his price continue to plummet… At least for those who don’t own him!
- Boyd as first emergency is an interesting one – was cleared by the docs this week, but it was always going to be a tough side to break into… Surely there would be a late change to bring him in though, so be sure to check the final teams for this game at 6:00 tomorrow!
St Kilda
B: Jason Blake, Zac Dawson, Sam Gilbert
HB: Steven Baker, Sam Fisher, Brendon Goddard
C: Farren Ray, Nick Dal Santo, Raphael Clarke
HF: Andrew McQualter, James Gwilt, Adam Schneider
F: David Armitage, Justin Koschitzke, Stephen Milne
Foll: Michael Gardiner, Lenny Hayes, Leigh Montagna
I/C: Jack Steven, Jarryn Geary, Clinton Jones, Steven King
Emg: Robert Eddy, Brett Peake, Ben McEvoy
In: Ray, Steven
Out: Brett Peake, Robert Eddy
- Peake out is a fair call by the Saints – give him a run at Sandy and see how he goes…
- Jack Steven will play his first game of the year (second for his career) and i am personally really excited – his debut last year was fantastic, so fingers crossed he can replicate that form regularly. He is a nuggety HFF who loves to tackle and can kick a good goal – he has long been likened to Paul Chapman.
NORTH MELBOURNE v MELBOURNE
North Melbourne
B: Michael Firrito, Scott Thompson, Brady Rawlings
HB: Nathan Grima, Lachlan Hansen, Sam Wright
C: Jack Ziebell, Ben Cunnington, Ryan Bastinac
HF: Aaron Edwards, Todd Goldstein, Brent Harvey
F: Daniel Wells, David Hale, Ben Warren
Foll: Hamish McIntosh, Andrew Swallow, Liam Anthony
I/C: Lindsay Thomas, Leigh Adams, Levi Greenwood, Scott McMahon
Emg: Ben Ross, Josh Smith, Cruize Garlett
In: Wright
Out: Gavin Urquhart (knee)
- Wright coming in in good news for his owners, however the question remains as to whether he will score much more than 40 points though – possibly the fact he is up against a young Dees side could see his output increased!
Melbourne
B: James McDonald, Matthew Warnock, James Frawley
HB: Cameron Bruce, Colin Garland, Clint Bartram
C: Jack Trengove, Aaron Davey, Nathan Jones
HF: Brad Green, Ricky Petterd, Lynden Dunn
F: Colin Sylvia, Matthew Bate, Stefan Martin
Foll: Mark Jamar, Jack Grimes, Brent Moloney
I/C: Joel Macdonald, Jordie McKenzie, Tom Scully, Jamie Bennell
Emg: Rohan Bail, Jared Rivers, Jake Spencer
No change
- Second week in a row unchanged for the Dees! With Bail and Rivers waiting in the wings, everyone will want to work hard to keep their spots!
ADELAIDE v PORT ADELAIDE
Adelaide
B: Graham Johncock, Ben Rutten, Michael Doughty
HB: Andrew McLeod, Nathan Bock, Simon Goodwin
C: Matthew Jaensch, Brent Reilly, Nathan van Berlo
HF: Jason Porplyzia, Brett Burton, Bernie Vince
F: Jared Petrenko, Kurt Tippett, Richard Douglas
Foll: Ivan Maric, Scott Thompson, Tyson Edwards
I/C: Myke Cook, Phil Davis, Scott Stevens, Chris Schmidt
Emg: Jonathon Griffin, Taylor Walker, Jack Gunston
In: Bock, Jaensch, Stevens
Out: Patrick Dangerfield (hand), Chris Knights (foot), Ricky Henderson (hamstring)
New: Matthew Jaensch (Sturt/rookie list)
- Jaensch will make his debut for the Crows – he is a lively medium sized forward with a good ability to win the ball at the junior levels. He is 20 years old, so is classified as a mature-aged player – he comes off the rookie list. I’d want to see him play though before trading him in.
- Dangerfield and Knights are both massive losses for the Crows, and each should be expected to spend a few weeks on the sidelines.
- Bock will come into the side which is very good news, however the great news is the fact that Phil Davis has been able to keep his spot despite Bock’s recall.
Port Adelaide
B: Jacob Surjan, Alipate Carlile, Troy Chaplin
HB: Paul Stewart, Chad Cornes, Steven Salopek
C: Danyle Pearce, Domenic Cassisi, Jason Davenport
HF: Matt Thomas, Warren Tredrea, David Rodan
F: Robbie Gray, Brett Ebert, Justin Westhoff
Foll: Dean Brogan, Travis Boak, Kane Cornes
I/C: Hamish Hartlett, Jay Schulz, Nathan Krakouer, Josh Carr
Emg: Cameron Hitchcock, Matthew Lobbe, Michael Pettigrew
In: Davenport, Krakouer
Out: Tom Logan (concussion), Matthew Lobbe
- Both Krakouer and Davenport are big ins for the Power – they were both out with minor injuries.
- It seems the second ruck experiment with Lobbe has failed after only one week as he is back to the SANFL
ESSENDON v HAWTHORN
Essendon
B: Heath Hocking, Dustin Fletcher, Ricky Dyson
HB: Jarrod Atkinson, Cale Hooker, Henry Slattery
C: Mark McVeigh, Jobe Watson, Brent Stanton
HF: Angus Monfries, Scott Gumbleton, Brent Prismall
F: Alwyn Davey, Michael Hurley, Sam Lonergan
Foll: Patrick Ryder, Andrew Welsh, Jason Winderlich
I/C: Courtenay Dempsey, Nathan Lovett-Murray, David Zaharakis, David Hille
Emg: Kyle Hadighan, Ben Howlett, Tyson Slattery
In: Davey, Prismall, Atkinson, Lonergan
Out: Jake Melksham, Travis Colyer, Tayte Pears (arm), Kyle Reimers (hand)
- The axe has swung again at Essendon, and those with either Melksham or Colyer will be spitting chips (and those with Howlett for that matter!). We will hopefully see more of these boys later in the year when Knights finally realises that Essendon can’t win the premiership this year and he still needs to build these kids for the future!
- Reimers and Pears will each be out for over a month, so trade if you have either of them!
- Prismall finally comes back into the squad, and Atkinson comes in for his first game of the year – i liked Atkinson’s finish to last year as a running half-back, and despite a poor NAB cup, i would still be keeping watch on him – a potential smokey!
Hawthorn
B: Brent Guerra, Stephen Gilham, Thomas Murphy
HB: Ben Stratton, Ryan Schoenmakers, Grant Birchall
C: Jarrod Kayler-Thomson, Liam Shiels, Jordan Lewis
HF: Cyril Rioli, Lance Franklin, Chance Bateman
F: Michael Osborne, Jarryd Roughead, Campbell Brown
Foll: Brent Renouf, Luke Hodge, Brad Sewell
I/C: Xavier Ellis, Rick Ladson, Brendan Whitecross, Clinton Young
Emg: Garry Moss, Beau Muston, Carl Peterson
In: Renouf
Out: Carl Peterson
- Two of the least surprising changes this week – Peterson has been out of form for a couple of weeks and they desperately need Renouf. It is also great to see JKT given his third game!
- Sam Mitchell has not been named, intimating he is still suffering from the hamstring issue which saw him miss last week.
SYDNEY SWANS v BRISBANE LIONS
Sydney Swans
B: Rhyce Shaw, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Tadhg Kennelly
HB: Martin Mattner, Heath Grundy, Nick Malceski
C: Jarrad McVeigh, Brett Kirk, Lewis Jetta
HF: Ryan O’Keefe, Adam Goodes, Josh Kennedy
F: Mark Seaby, Daniel Bradshaw, Jarred Moore
Foll: Shane Mumford, Jude Bolton, Kieren Jack
I/C: Daniel Hannebery, Ted Richards, Nick Smith, Jesse White
Emg: Ed Barlow, Gary Rohan, Pat Veszpremi
In: Richards
Out: Craig Bolton (achilles)
- Nothing particularly exciting at the Swans this week. Looking forward to Veszpremi getting a game though – he kicked 5 goals on the weekend in a great display!
Brisbane Lions
B: Ashley McGrath, Matt Maguire, Josh Drummond
HB: Travis Johnstone, Joel Patfull, Andrew Raines
C: Daniel Rich, Simon Black, Justin Sherman
HF: Luke Power, Jonathan Brown, James Polkinghorne
F: Brent Staker, Brendan Fevola, Todd Banfield
Foll: Mitchell Clark, Jared Brennan, Michael Rischitelli
I/C: Jack Redden, Matthew Leuenberger, Matt Austin, Amon Buchanan
Emg: Troy Selwood, James Hawksley, Tom Rockliff
In: Buchanan, Sherman, Austin, Power
Out: Daniel Merrett (hamstring), Albert Proud, James Hawksley, Tom Rockliff
- I hate you Voss!! I can’t believe that Rockliff has been dropped from the side… hopefully it won’t be for too long, but all we have to do is hold tight – he has plenty more money to make, he just needs the games!
- Buchanan is a good inclusion – he has great DT potential in this lineup and is a good price, so keep an eye on him!
GEELONG CATS v RICHMOND
Geelong Cats
B: Darren Milburn, Tom Lonergan, Josh Hunt
HB: Corey Enright, Harry Taylor, Andrew Mackie
C: James Kelly, Cameron Ling, David Wojcinski
HF: Tom Hawkins, James Podsiadly, Paul Chapman
F: Steve Johnson, Cameron Mooney, Gary Ablett
Foll: Brad Ottens, Joel Selwood, Jimmy Bartel
I/C (from): Mark Blake, Shannon Byrnes, Simon Hogan, Ryan Gamble, Allen Christensen, Mitchell Duncan, Travis Varcoe
In: Varcoe, Gamble, Christensen, Duncan
Out: Max Rooke (knee)
New: Allen Christensen (Geelong Falcons)
- Varcoe is named for his first game of the year and is a big inclusion – he had a massive pre-season and looked likely for a breakout year before injury struck. Keep an eye on him! Duncan is the other big inclusion (assuming he makes the Friday night cut!)
- Christensen is named on the extended bench for his debut and if he does play could be a great DT prospect (probably more so in the future than this year though). As a junior he was an elite ball winner with fantastic disposal skills – he averaged 26.5 disposals through his 15 games in the TAC cup last year. He had a fantastic year which culminated in coming runner up in the Morrish Medal (the TAC equivalent to the Brownlow). This kid should be a star in future years so certainly keep an eye on his early games!
Richmond
B: Luke McGuane, Will Thursfield, Kelvin Moore
HB: Shane Tuck, Brett Deledio, Chris Newman
C: Shane Edwards, Daniel Jackson, Ben Cousins
HF: Ben Nason, Jack Riewoldt, Robin Nahas
F: Mitch Morton, Alex Rance, David Astbury
Foll: Tyrone Vickery, Dean Polo, Nathan Foley
I/C (from): Troy Simmonds, Matt White, Jeromey Webberley, Mitch Farmer, Andrew Collins, Tom Hislop, Matthew Dea
In: Hislop, White, Morton, Jackson, Polo, Thursfield, Webberley
Out: Richard Tambling (leg), Trent Cotchin (leg), Troy Taylor (leg), Dustin Martin (soreness)
New: Jeromey Webberley (Clarence)
- Another SEVEN changes for Richmond this week, one of which is Jeromey Webberley, who is finally named for his first game (on the extended bench mind you!). He is a middle-aged recruit taken midway through last years draft and is a running half-back. He is capable of winning a bit of ball, and he scored 78 points against Collingwood in the pre-season, suggesting that he is capable at senior level. Could be a great downgrade target in a couple of weeks.
- There are several big outs for Richmond though, with Tambling, Cotchin, Taylor, and worst of all, Dustin Martin sidelined. The fact Martin is only out with ‘soreness’ intimates it will only be a week/they don’t want him being murdered by Geelong.
CARLTON v COLLINGWOOD
Carlton
B: Ryan Houlihan, Michael Jamison, Aaron Joseph
HB: Paul Bower, Simon White, Jordan Russell
C: Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd, Kade Simpson
HF: Brock McLean, Setanta O’hAilpin, Marc Murphy
F: Eddie Betts, Lachie Henderson, Chris Yarran
Foll: Matthew Kreuzer, Heath Scotland, Andrew Carrazzo
I/C (from): Dennis Armfield, Jeff Garlett, Shaun Grigg, Sam Jacobs, Kane Lucas, Mitch Robinson, Jarrad Waite
In: Waite, Bower, Grigg, Jacobs, Robinson
Out: Andrew Walker (collarbone), Robert Warnock
- Warnock is an annoying out more than anything else – his form hasn’t been fantastic, so it is no surprise they are sending him back to the bullants for a week or two.
- Waite and Bower are a couple of good inclusions for the Blues – it is good to see though that despite the inclusion of two backmen, White is still named at CHB in the side!
Collingwood
B: Heath Shaw, Ben Reid, Ben Johnson
HB: Harry O’Brien, Nick Maxwell, Sharrod Wellingham
C: Luke Ball, Dane Swan, Steele Sidebottom
HF: Josh Fraser, Travis Cloke, Alan Didak
F: Dayne Beams, Paul Medhurst, Leon Davis
Foll: Darren Jolly, Scott Pendlebury, Dale Thomas
I/C (from): Brent Macaffer, John McCarthy, Tarkyn Lockyer, Simon Buckley, Nathan Brown, Chris Dawes, Alan Toovey
In: Buckley, McCarthy, Lockyer
Out: -
New: Simon Buckley (Melbourne)
- Simon Buckley has been named on the extended bench for his first game of the year. Last year Buckley was delisted by Melbourne and picked up by Collingwood in the draft – he is a running backman, capable of also running through the middle. He is dirt cheap for what he offers (he averaged 77 points at Melbourne in 2008), however he less than impressed through the NAB cup. I doubt he will actually play this week, but it is good to see him on the verge!
WEST COAST v FREMANTLE
West Coast
B: Shannon Hurn, Darren Glass, Brett Jones
HB: Scott Selwood, Will Schofield, Andrew Embley
C: Matt Rosa, Matt Priddis, Brad Ebert
HF: Ashton Hams, Josh Kennedy, Beau Waters
F: Nic Naitanui, Quinten Lynch, Mark LeCras
Foll: Dean Cox, Adam Selwood, Tom Swift
I/C (from): Mitchell Brown, Chris Masten, Eric MacKenzie, Patrick McGinnity, Ben McKinley, Brad Sheppard, Lewis Stevenson
In: Lynch, McKinley, MacKenzie, Swift, Sheppard
Out: Matthew Spangher, Bradd Dalziell
New: Brad Sheppard (East Fremantle)
- Sheppard is the main DT concern listed above – he is named for his debut much later than was initially expected. He had a brilliant pre-season, impressing everyone at the Eagles before having a very less than ordinary NAB cup. Whilst in his junior days Sheppard was an attacking backman, his NAB games suggested Woosha would play him much deeper in defence than is good for DT purposes. Still, keep an eye on him though as his pedigree suggests he will one day be a star!
- Also, Ashton Hams is named for his third game and is named on the field, meaning he will definitely play.
Fremantle
B: Alex Silvagni, Chris Tarrant, Ryan Crowley
HB: Greg Broughton, Luke McPharlin, Roger Hayden
C: Adam McPhee, David Mundy, Paul Hasleby
HF: Michael Johnson, Matthew Pavlich, Stephen Hill
F: Matt de Boer, Chris Mayne, Hayden Ballantyne
Foll: Aaron Sandilands, Michael Barlow, Paul Duffield
I/C (from): Nathan Fyfe, Rhys Palmer, Anthony Morabito, Byron Schammer, Dylan Roberton, Kepler Bradley, Zac Clarke
In: Schammer, Palmer, Roberton, Bradley, Clarke
Out: Clancee Pearce, Jay van Berlo
New: Dylan Roberton (Dandenong Stingrays)
- As discussed earlier, Fremantle had to demote two of their rookies due to Thornton and Ruffles coming off the long term injury list – it seems that Pearce and Van Berlo are the unlucky ones – neither will get another game unless if Fremantle have another LTI, or at the conclusion of round 11, Freo can nominate one rookie to be permanently elevated.
- Palmer comes in for his first game of the year – he has now played five games straight in the WAFL and is in very good form – I know i will be looking at him very closely, especially with the sort of form Freo are currently in!
- Dylan Roberton will debut (extended bench again) – he is a tall defender, the worst kind of player for DT unfortunately! Whilst he averaged 18 disposals in the TAC cup, he is still very raw by AFL standards and will take a while to build up the body appropriate to play consistent top level footy. He averaged only 34 points in the NAB cup.
41 Comments on Round 6
While I’ll be keeping a close eye on Cunnington’s 2nd game, I’m particularly interested in how Jaensch performs – have read good things about him. Also happy to see a couple more Defender-classified rookies coming through in Webberley and Sheppard :-) The rookie I’m really wanting to debut is Rohan – he’s in the emergencies again this week!
What are peoples thought on starting Hams (v Freo) over Maguire (v Sydney) this week?
I’ve now checked Richmond’s squad of 25 three times and I still can’t find Relton Roberts! Come on Hardwick, we need little Relton to play his 3rd game, preferably sooner rather than later.
I would have thought Ben Howlett deserved a recall also.
hey guys great post i love it how you have comments about the changes
But anyway i havent got any playing bodys on my fwd,ruc and mid field bench. (since you barely need to worry about your ruc bench im not going to bother with them.)
i have Dustin Martin and Mitchell Banner on my mid fielder bench and since martin and banner aren’t playing this week i was thinking about downgrading banner to Jarrod Kayler-Thomson. I have 16 trades left do you think this is a good idea?
its the same deal with my fwd bench. tom rockcliff and Cameron HITCHCOCK who aren’t playing so i was thinking about downgrading Cameron HITCHCOCK to Phil Davis. What do you think? (i have 16 trades left)
Wilson, You could toss a coin between Maguire and Hams because I think they will score at a similar level. If pushed for a definative answer, I’d go Maguire.
Maanco, I have serious doubts about the ability of Mitch Banner and Cameron Hitchcock getting a game for Port Adelaide in the near future.
With Port Adelaide near full strength (and Motlop to return possibly next week), the only way back in for these two would be through injuries to Port’s best 22.
yer i know thats why i want to trade them out
Cameron HITCHCOCK out to Phil Davis in
Mitch banner out to Jarrod Kayler-Thomson in
What do you think? or is there better downgrade targets?
With all the outs this week and the rumours surrounding Gia’s ribs ie. he’ll be the late withdrawal for Boyd, I’m a little nervous having no cover on my Forwards bench (I too am wondering if Relton still exists!) – would it be wrong to upgrade Rockliff to Sylvia? I’ve had Rockliff from the start.
Maanco – have you considered Cunnington in the Mids, or is he too pricey?
So here’s my dilemma.
I have $244,300 in the bank with 18 trades….and this round has thrown up my first real quandary.
I have Martin, Boyd and Bail in my midfield, and I am loathed to cop a doughnut at any point in the year, let alone in the early stages. I also have Dangerfield in my Forward line (with Hitchcock, Gumbleton, Pods and Co)
I have, however, hatched a plan…tell me what you think:
This week:
OUT: Nason ($204,400), Martin ($213,300)
IN: Davis ($94,500), Wellingham ($338,600)
This leaves me $228,900 in the bank to upgrade Dangerfield ($228,700) to Goodes, Sylvia, Stevie J or Didak….
My main concern is that Welly flames out after a good start, and doesn’t prove to be a keeper. There is no way I’m burning another trade in the MIDs after this one, so I want to make sure that I am not wishing I could trade him out later on in the season.
Feedback….anyone???
@ Juzz – I think Rockliff has plenty of time to improve, and will be in and out of the side all year. Despite his form, Vossy doesn’t seem to be as enamored with him as we all seem to be.
So, if you are in a position where you have trades (and cash) to burn, then Sylvia is a good choice..Although from what I’ve read, every man and his dog is going to jump on this week before he gets too pricey!)
Personally I would be keeping him – the whole reason you buy Rocky in the first place is to get cash out of him, and you gotta take the good with the bad. But if you’re that concerned about the “potential donut,” then pull the trigger…
eebzzub – I think Nason has more cash in him – any other Defenders you could look to downgrade?
Wellingham worries me a little as he’s a bit of an unknown quantity – looks like his star is on the rise, but I’d feel more comfortable with a fallen/falling Premium such as Joel Selwood or Jordan Lewis…
@maanco
I have grave doubts about the ability of JKT to keep his spot long term, and I think that with 16 trades left, you should be thinking about trying to upgrade with at least one of your trades (whilst taking profit with the other one)
How much cash do you have in the bank?
@ Ben
I, unfortunately, didn’t have the patience to wait around for Relton, and broke my “no sideways rookie trades” rule. Again.
You’d think the future would be looking pretty shaky for both those boys, given that Essendon has 4 changes and Richmond has 7 changes….and still doesn’t see fit to bring either of them in.
The only team more shambolic than those 2 in the AFL are my beloved Crows…
@Juzz
I agree that Nason has more cash in him, but my backline is flying. I have silvagni on the bench with the remainder of my backline averaging 674 per week (that 96.29 per player, per week).
The aim of my little plan is to upgrade Dangerfield to a Premium. In order to do that, I can’t spend more than 380k in the mids this week…and whilst Welly worries me too, I don’t see too many any other viable options in my price range…
You think Lewis will improve? I can’t cop 60s from a “premium” player.
And, because i’m an*l, I don’t like having 2 players from the same team in one line. I have Bartel….and I worry about Selwood. stupid, no?
Hey guys, I think I need some captain advice. I keep getting smashed every week due to captain Swan having a pretty ordinary year compared to last. The only thing is I don’t really have anyone else who would be much better. So yeah, regretting picking Swan over Ablett pretty badly. Doesn’t seem like I have much choice other than to get the super expensive Ablett in, but I’m not really sure who I should trade out of my midfield. I don’t particularly want to get Swan out just yet while he’s so underpriced when he could potentially explode later (same applies to Pendles and J Selwood). My other mids are Lewis, Barlow, and Trentgrove. What do you guys reckon?
@ eebzzub – fair comment on Essendon, having been at the Anzac Day game, I’m not confident we could even beat Adelaide at the moment and their current selection policy seems to involve picking names out of a hat… lol Howlett is at least named among the Emergencies, unlike Relton who appears to be MIA. Unlike the previous 2 years, my Defence has given me no grief at all this year (so far) and have out-performed my Forwards at least once!
My only question mark on Lewis is that he scored well last week with no Mitchell in the team – timing-wise you obviously can’t wait to see if Mitchell’s return will affect Lewis’ scoring.
You wouldn’t like my team structure then – I’ve got 2 Cats in the mids, 2 Hawks in the backs and 2 Dogs and 2 Lions in the forwards – not intentional, just how it’s currently looking… lol
@ Strife – having picked Goddard as my Captain last week when I have the likes of Bartel, Stanton, ROK and Hodge in my side, I’m in no position to provide sound advice on choice of Captain!! However, having said that, with Mitchell out and the way my Bombers are playing, I’d be inclined to give Lewis a try this week if you don’t believe Swan will bounce back with a big one. HTH.
@ Strife
Surely you stick with Quality. You know Swan is going to average around 100+ over a season….It stands to reason that if he has a few weeks at 80, he’s needing some big scores to get back to that average.
The only thing more infuriating than seeing your consistent captain underperforming is to switch to someone else and see him explode.
@Juzz
After I made that comment, I realised how stupid it was. It’s not like they’re playing in/for the same position, right?
I think (this hour) that i’m more inclined to gamble on Welly having a breakout year than Lewis recapturing past, consistent form…that’s due to change in about 53 minutes.
As aside, keep the faith with Bombers. If they learn how to play defense, they will become a force to be reckoned with due to their legs and speed.
I’ve made my trades. Gray and Hunt out, Hams and Sylvia in. 16 trades and $190,000 in the bank.
eebzzub – tbo I don’t really consider an average of around 100 to be good enough for a captain, but you do have a good point about how pissed i’d be if he exploded after i ditched him. that’s what i was thinking along the lines of GAJ – even if swan does explode it’s hard to imagine it being SO high above whatever GAJ happensd to score that week. tbo I kind of want them both on my side so I can just switch them around depending on form. the way i see it, weeks of keeping him as captain when he’s under-performing just so i don’t miss out on the one week when he explodes before i switch him back isn’t really that worth it.
also, sorry i started this discussion here – just realised what the topic of tuney’s tuition was this week :p
@Strife
But you’ve already kept him while he’s underperformed….law of averages says that he has to have an above average game soon…!
I just don’t see that you have any other viable captaincy options…
There is no point trading Swan out (even if he wasn’t underpriced) because, frankly, you don’t burn trades on trading out premiums (when they’re fit and firing). If you don’t consider them Premium enough to keep (ie. if you don’t have faith in their ability to rebound), why did you pick them in the first place?
Pendles – i have him in my side, and love his consistency, but he’s not Captain material. Very rarely does he score over 110, and he’s still prone to the odd below average game. Given that you’ve obviously gone for the Set-and-Forget captain strategy, I don’t think Pendles has enough “up” games to justify selection
J. Selwood – will rebound, but similar to Pendles. Watching him play on the weekend also makes me think he may not be 100% – he’s performed at such a high level for such a long time at such a high intensity, he’s surely due for some downtime?
Lewis – I’m not sold on, despite Juzz’s dismay at his Bombers.
Barlow and Trengrove – I have a no rookie capital policy in my team, but if you were inclined, I see no reason not to pick Barlow – but again, not a long term captain.
Unless you have a Hodge or O’Keefe type player (even perhaps Sandilands?), I really see no other option for your captaincy
eebzzub – I do indeed have a Hodge type player in my squad – Hodge. didn’t mention him before because i more thinking along the lines of which midfielder i’d trade out for gablett (hodge is in my backline). i guess i could just give him a crack at captain and hope that swan finds some form in the next couple of weeks and really starts to pump out some huge scores. i suppose my instinct to get GAJ in is probably more reactionary than anything else because it’s pretty frustrating going head to head against a team that is probably not as awesome as yours overall but losing by a couple of points anyway because their captain choice basically gives them another entire player worth of points.
I don’t know why you would get him now. That ship has well and truly sailed, and you needed to be on it from round 1…one average game, and his price will become a little more reasonable, but until then, you are just burning a trade on a sideways (slightly upward) move.
I get your frustration – I lost last week by 7 points with Gumby on the bench facing a team with GAJ as captain…but sideways moves (premium for premium) are generally a wasted trade IMO.
Strife- please please please don’t trade swan!! Yeah it’s annoying that his average has been down, but think of it this way- if I didn’t have him, would u want him?? I know that of swan wasn’t currently in my side I would be saving up to get him as soon as he bottomed out as we KNOW what he is capable of!! Yes he had a slow start, but so have collingwood- they have only just really hit their straps and I feel it won’t be too long before we see a massive score from swanny! Wait on ablett, as someone else said, all it will take is one bad game to pull his score right down! In then end, it’s all about the finals anyway!
Eezbub, check out my Tuesday article on Lewis- I think u will find he ain’t too bad an option afterall… I’m personally a little sceptical on wellingham, especially since they nearly traded him in the off season as part of the ball trade! Yes he looks good now, but I can’t imagine him really being a keeper- Lewis is a much more appropriate option I think!!
Good luck!
@ Toby
Firstly, thank God someone agrees with my Swan thoughts. I was beginning to feel all alone….!!
Secondly, is there a case to be made for a longer term view dollar wise? I mean, upgrading to Lewis gives me 20k less the next week to upgrade Danger…which in turn gives me 20k less flexibility going forward…?
Ok guys, I can’t really keep arguing with that kind of logic, especially when it seems to be the consensus. I guess I’ll just make Hodge my captain until either Swan pulls his finger out or Ablett has a bad game and gives me an opportunity to pounce (though I won’t be holding my breath waiting for the latter to happen). I think I’ll also write a little note to remind myself next season to start with both of the two best dreamteamers so I can just swap the captaincy around if one of them hits a rough patch. Bit of a shitty lesson to have to learn, but I guess you’re right about it not mattering too much before finals time, Toby.
Well thanks guys for talking me out of doing something I’d probably regret later ;-)
Yeah there kinda is a point to be made re making money, but I’m of the opinion u don’t substitute quality just so u can get someone a bit better later… Who did u want to trade danger for next week? Remembering, u could afford Davis, brown (he will drop significantly this week), and maybe even didak… No point getting a mid ranged improver this week just to prevent from getting one next week… Know wat I mean? Sometimes it’s worth taking it a week at a time, especially due to the amount of problems this comp can throw up! In saying that, wellingham ain’t a BAD choice… I just think Lewis is probably smarter- only in 1% of teams too, so u don’t have to worry about him being too common…
So is anyone else going to try and talk me out of trading Rockliff to Sylvia? This upgrade would give me a forward line consisting of ROK, Brown, Brennan, Gia, Higgins, Sylvia, Pods/Gumby & Relton
@ Toby – see my comment in the coaches box ;-)
@ Juzz – I still don’t think you should trade. See reasons above. I also think you’re trading off a rumour (about Gia) which is never that great…especially as you have Brown under an injury cloud, and you have Higgins who is a known hammy risk. Trades are GOLD, and if you can avoid using them, you should. At all costs. No donut = no trade.
Having said that, it’s not a bad upgrade at all.
Not helping much, am i? ;)
Oh, and Toby – unfortunately, I already have Mr Davis.
FWD Line is currently – ROK, PAV, GIA, JAY-Z, NEON, PODS, Gumby with Danger and HitchCOCK on the bench.
Juzz – please note that I also have no cover for Gia. So if he doesn’t play, we’re both screwed ;)
I’m sticking with Swan as my skipper. He wasn’t the best performed DT player in 2009 by accident. He’s capable of racking up 40 possessions plus and I’m backing him in to do it this week against the Blues!
For those nervous about Gia being a late out, remember that Friday’s final teams (including all late withdrawals) must be done by 6:10 tonight (so 1.5hrs before lockout). So we will know then if he is playing or not, so make sure u check that before trading unnecessarily… Personally, i am not keen on trading bench players just for cover – the likes of Rockliff, Moles, Shuey, Hitchcock, etc have a way to go before they have given me every possible dollar, therefore i am keeping them, despite the fact it means i have no bench players playing in either my forward line or midfield… This is likely to be just a bad week, and i imagine a couple will be back next week! I will only trade them if 100% necessary!!
As for Captain, this week i am locking in Bartel vs Richmond at Skilled – if it rains, lock him in for 150+ I have Hodge as VC, but could easily give it to one of Hayes, Gibbs or Swan!
Ablett to miss…

Whoa! Bet “Strife” is glad he didn’t pull the trigger on the GAJ trade!! :)
BIG news! Thanks Leatherhead!!
Wow… that’s going to hurt a LOT of teams!
And it jump emphasises the point as to why you NEVER trade until late on a Friday!
And btw, before anyone even thinks about it, DO NOT TRADE HIM OUT!!! I know it seems even fruitless to warn people, but i can guarantee there will be plenty of panic trades from coaches who have no cover on their benches!
Not that I would’ve traded until the last minute, but I tried (on my own spreadsheet) various combinations of trades to see if there was any way possible I could get GAblett in this week – all to no avail. I hope he is the only late out for Geelong as I’ve got 4 Cats in my team and Bomber’s comments (yesterday?) re there being late changes coz they had to name their team only 3 days after playing on Monday made me very nervous… This news has sent another well-known site for DT’ers into semi-meltdown.
Haha my god if I had have traded him this week I would have been SO pissed! But yeah, it’ll be nice to have a week where I don’t get totally bent over by him :p
Makes you wonder, what if they weren’t playing Richmond? Would he still be out? Looks like they’re playing the late season resting games early.
And why not? I mean, Richmond will try to put up a fight, I’m sure, but they just don’t have the firepower to be even on the same park as the Catties.
(watch them go and win now….)
I reckon he’d probably be out regardless of who they were playing. ESPECIALLY since it’s hammy related. I can’t see Geelong risking a player like Ablett considering when players seem to be having their seasons ruined with hammy injuries left right and center.
Hey guys i’m in trouble :
should i trade seaby to cox or
ziebell to slyvia
HELP!!!!
Hey I’d be going cox personally- the points gained is much better and north play Melbourne this week unlike Sydney who play Brisbane… Overall I think the cox trade wins, but only marginally…
