It's a tricky one. I can definately see Toby's theory with Warnock as a 2nd ruck option. It's worth pointing out here that Toby's 2nd ruck this year (Kurt Tippett) has been sensational considering his starting price was just $191,300.

This has turned out to be an inspired selection and is one of the reasons Toby is currently sitting inside the top 300 overall.

Let's assume Warnock has a massive pre-season and takes over the mantle as Carlton's number 1 ruck. Kreuzer is now playing forward and 2nd ruck. Keep in mind that one of the reasons Warnock left Fremantle was to step out of the shadow of Aaron Sandilands. What's more, Carlton told Warnock he would be given every chance to make the number 1 ruck spot his own.

It's quite conceivable that Warnock could lift his scoring from 50 points per game to 70 points per game. At a price of around $150,000, we could use the $200,000 we save on another premium midfielder.

Throw in a cheapish Matthew Leuenberger as a very solid 3rd ruck option and either Max Bailey or Matt Lobbe as your number 4.

All of a sudden your ruck stocks are looking good, at minimal expense and with a very capable emergency (would have been gold this year)!

Sure it's a risk, but it's well worth consideration.

As for this year, I agree that Jacobs and Spencer both showed solid pre-season form. But with the benefit of hindsight, $75,300 was too thin for my 3rd ruck option and it hurt me badly.

I can't see myself without Kreuzer next year. He is such a consistent scorer, always getting around 70. With his third year in the system I expect him to maintain that consistency, but improve his output.

TBH, Warnock would probably need to be sub $120K for me to even have a look at him as a bench option. Not doubting his talent, but I'm with you Chad. I would consider Warnock as second ruck if he has a cracking pre-season, but not bench unless he ends up real cheap.

already thought about it (probably too much) but rucks next year are going to be interesting

(approx prices)
cox 480k
sandi 420k
clark 410k (with luenburger coming back)
h-mac 420k

i might look at a couple of cheaper options
jolly 385k
kruzer 330k

Warnock hasn't really scored well (50 avg in his 2 years) so what is the basis of thinking in him taking the next step? if he is 150k-200k it seems to me to be an awkward price. possibly not reliable enough for a #2 ruck, but too expensive for a #3 ruck?

I gotta say that I never forget about third and fourth rucks, but still got stiffed this year. Spencer and Jacobs both had good pre-seasons, contributed well in the NAB Cup and NAB Challenge games and had other ruckmen teammates with long term injuries.

Unforuntately Spencer dudded right out when the season proper started and Jacobs got injured, which was unfortunate because he was serving his purpose quite well.

Even in retrospect it would've been hard to nail third and fourth rucks this year. Angus Graham is the only decent option I'm seeing that had a cheap price tag and it would've been a risk to start him because he had an ordinary pre-season and wasn't named Round 1 in favour of Andrew Browne.

Great read on Warnock Ben! He's definately a lock for me in 2010 (assuming there are no more injury setbacks!). Carlton has hinted too that they will play Warnock as first ruck, and Kruezer as more a ruck/rover and CHF... Meaning even more game time for the big man!
Those out there wanting to play the big risk DT game and save cash for other areas on the ground, may want to even consider Warnock as a second ruck! He certainly has the ability to score appropriately!
