Dear Grechatano’s,
Thank you for submitting your team.
Having already used 14 trades this year, your team is nearing completion. Of the 30 players in your squad, the only player I would be trading out this week is Matt Maguire. Maguire has served his purpose brilliantly this year, averaging 75 points per game and rising in price from $101,700 to $286,600. Maguire has without doubt been one of the most valuable DT selections in 2010, but there is no place for sentiment in football and it is clearly time for him to go. He is out for another 3 weeks with his foot injury and given his past injury concerns with this foot, combined with the fact he is not a keeper, it’s time for him to go.
MY RECOMMENDATION THIS WEEK:
OUT: Matt Maguire ($286,600)
IN: Heath Scotland ($413,200)
I rate Scotland as a high quality player and the bonus with Scotland is that you can insert him into your backline, despite the fact he plays as a midfielder. Scotland has averaged 101 points per game in 2010 and he shows no signs of slowing down. Scotland is the 3rd highest ranked defender behind Luke Hodge and Brendon Goddard in terms of total points scored in 2010, illustrious company indeed!
I recommend holding onto Jonathan Brown, despite the fact he is out for 4 weeks (3 games with the split round) with an abdominal strain. Brown when fit is a definite keeper and you need him for the finals. It seems pointless to trade him out and then bring him back in later in the season, using two valuable trades in the process.
For the 138,060 teams with Jonathan Brown in your side, I see no point trading him out unless you are currently sitting inside the top 500 teams overall and gunning for the car. If you are outside the top 500, you have no chance of winning the car because you are too far behind the leader, so it’s time to focus on winning your private league.
For those following my team on the site this year, my team has now slipped out of contention for the car after I played with only 19 players last weekend (a record low for me). Never before have I had three late withdrawals from the same position (Brown, Sylvia and Didak)! It’s all my own fault though because my horrible selection of Relton Roberts prior to Round 1 has come back to bite me in the worst possible way. My other non playing forward was Shaun Higgins. This example highlights the importance of having quality cover! Needless to say, my focus is now on private league glory and I’ll have another crack at the car in 2011!
Good luck!

Will be trading Maguire for either Scotland or Gilbert this week. Leaning towards Gilbert purely because i’m a Saints fan and love watching him play.
I think with 6 trades remaining and the fact you have so many rookies on field, you cant afford to be spending so much money upgrading one player.
I think you need to do maguire -> duffield and then bastinac -> stanton.
With your final 4 trades, you need to downgrade a bench player that will make you the most money, then with that money upgrade grant (or fyfe) + white (or webberly), leaving you one trade incase of a injury. Otherwise you go into finals with wayyy to many rookies on field.
Dont spend your 200k bank now on upgrading one player, you will be )(#*$)(* for the rest of the year if you do
ok thanks for the help. will be doing this trade.
however what to do with S.White and Webberely ? These guys are still on my team and I have no cover for them?!
@Ben – could you please update the Results page with the FT guys Round 12 scores? I think the Trades are up to date, but still showing Round 11 scores. TIA :-)
Juzz – I’ll remind our ‘behind-the-scenes-guy’ today – thanks.
And Gavin, good to have another Saints fan on the forum! I too needed to trade for a defender last week and went for Gilbert – i had him all of last year and he never let me down, and you are right, his runs from defence are amazing. His is remarkably consistent (regularly 90 – 110), which is a great asset in a year where so many players are suffering from fluctuating form! I thought it a line-ball between Gilbo and Scotland, hence why i let my heart win in the end! :-)
Team has some serious problem getting players on the ground.
Think it might be better to try and fit 2 players on the ground rather than getting one premium in and leaving a doughnut.
You really need Heath, Webberley or White to get a game this week.
2 players with a 75 average still gets you more that a premium + doughnut
Priority to cover doughnuts before getting the best team possible!!!!
Maguire (286,600) > Gilbee Avg 89 (331,100) Cost $44,500
White (220,400) > Grimes Avg 83 (314,800) Cost $94,400
You’ll have a full backline playing and still have 63,600 in the bank.
Maths should get you 172 points on average which is better than Scotland’s 101 points + 0
Now if one of your bench players are getting a game this week I would still keep he cash in the bank to cover for future injuries.
Also leave the C on Ablett, don’t think chasing the best captian is a good strategy. Has’t worked for me in the past. Just pick one player and leave the C on him unless your team is playing Geelong, StKilda, Swans then think about it and still probably make Ablett Captian.
Best of Luck
Sorry to re-post the same question guys, but i’m interested to hear people’s thoughts on Brennan at just over 300 at the moment? Cheers..
Sorry, lads, but I have to comment. You generally do good work, but this component of the site (and this article in particular) is terrible.
Let me explain why it’s flower.
1. This team is miles from “nearing completion” and will need some serious luck to ever do so.
Reason, his team has 5 major holes (and that is being generous and considering Barlow, Pods and Rockcliff can continue their form – not an easy task for first year players) in Webberly, Maquire, Bastinac, Grant and Fyfe/Brown. Not to mention underwhelming players in Shaw, Mitchell, Goods and Brown.
All of these holes needs to be fixed before your side nears “good”.
2. You recommend one trade. Madness.
He has no cover, 2 donuts in his team and rookies playing galore. How is measured trading helping anyone?
Furthremore, where is the information in relation to his league standing? Clearly the car is out of reach for a kid who has mismanaged the flower out of his list, but where is the analysis on why he needs to make one trade?
Personally, I agree with one of the commenters above – shore up this flower side. 200K will go a long way to fixing Maguire and Webberly.
This, of course, leads to difficult decisions regarding 4 trades (heaps of holes), but these can only be made in the context of league position (i.e. how much cash / pride on the line?).
3. This flower paragraph:
“For the 138,060 teams with Jonathan Brown in your side, I see no point trading him out unless you are currently sitting inside the top 500 teams overall and gunning for the car. If you are outside the top 500, you have no chance of winning the car because you are too far behind the leader, so it’s time to focus on winning your private league.”
First, he has OP. Jonno is definatly not required in my team with OP, nor in anyone’s provided they have one of the 20 more-than-adequate-with-less-risk replacements. Silly, baseless comment.
Second, you do not need to be in the top 500 to have a chance at the car. Any half-decent DTer knows that the early stars generally fade away as injuries hit. A guy in our private league came third 2 years ago and was around 5000th at this stage of the competition.
Thirdly, sharpen up, son.
I agree with the fixing of the donuts over the upgrade option that other posters have suggested.
But i dont agree with the poster above who rates someone in the 5000th’s a chance, if you look at last year team director’s worst ranking was 223rd and spent more roughly half the year as 1st. With so many cheap keepers this year teams have been finished alot faster and have reached maximum scoring potential faster than ever. I doubt someone outside 500th will win it this year, and will likely be someone currently in the top 100.
Also how do you know Brown has OP, Its possible its a reoccurance of his hip poblem he had operated on pre-season. I do have a vested interest in this though seeing as I’m a Brown owner and will be holding onto him, likely eating his a zero this week doing so, and if you’re going for league glory i see no problem in holding onto him, especially if you have a finals spot wrapped up.
A valid opinion or two SammyH, but a little less hostility next time hey
Geez something sure fired up SammyH! Anyways..
I am in the same position as a lot of people, with a few backs out (Maguire, Hargrave, Webberly not playing), as well has having J Brown now injured.
I have two bench players covering for JB (albeit shit ones: watts and hitchcock), and I’m running low on trades, so I’m going to upgrade Maguire->Gilbert instead. Hopefully Hargrave is back soon and finds some form – unless he’s out for the year I’m pretty much stuck with him.
Sammy H,
All feedback, whether positive or negative is welcome on our site, but we will not tolerate obscene language. Not only does it disrespect our site, it also demonstrates your lack of intelligence.
Please also get your facts right before posting further rants on our site, Jonathan Brown does NOT have OP. He has an ongoing hip complaint which flared up after Round 4 and has not improved since. This has been confirmed numerous times by Dr. Peter Larkins.
I also dispute this ill informed comment: “Any half-decent DTer knows that the early stars generally fade away as injuries hit”. As Joker has correctly pointed out above, this is simply not the case.
Finally, given the fact you are such an expert, what is your overall ranking? Please provide proof as I can’t trust your word based on your comment above.
Ben forget about his rank
what would he do to fix Grechatano’s team?
SammyH.
Your opinion is most welcome. However, unnecessarily bad language will not be tolerated. Consider this your first and final warning.
Cheers.
Steve G
what’s all this i hear about that you can hedge your bets this week with your captains selection?
Sammy – i guess the thing that needs to be considered is where the team really CAN get to – there is no point burning all 6 trades to get the team right, only to have none left for finals. Essentially, it is worth stripping the team back to ‘players who are playing’ and ‘players who aren’t playing.’ If i were the coach of this team, i would spend my money and trades on players who were gonna give me a donut – i.e. Maguire. Webberley may play, so i’d keep him (can understand trading if he is out), and he still has money to make and players like Carrazzo and Fisher have some money to drop before it may be an idea to bring them in.
Brown i think should be dealt with differently depending on your situation – owners who have cover in the likes of Rockliff could be pretty happy keeping him on the pine for a few weeks, whereas those with no cover may be better to offload him. For what it’s worth, if i had 8-10 trades left, id get rid of him. But i dont really feel compelled to as i have Rockliff and Hitchcock on the bench and with more pressing issues such as my final mid spot.
Wilson, I’m still a fan on Brennan, however he is now riskier than ever. Despite issues surrounding his injury woes, he was played as a defender on the weekend, showing that Vossy may play him as a bit-part player this year (like he has the past few), resulting in some pretty inconsistent scoring. He was a great target this year thanks to his midfield time, but i can just see him being a frustrating pick-up at this time of year, sorry to say.
Man who would have thought that posting this team up would generate so much interest.
Every Team has to be accessed on what the teams goals are. In general I would assume that recommended trades are suggested to increase the teams overall ranking and not to make league finals etc.
Sammy H,
I have to agree with Ben here, I actually like your feedback as there is alot of honesty and constructive feedback but this is a friendly site and we would like to keep it that way.
PS not everyone is after the league title. I think most want to finish as high up in the overall rankings as possible.
PS my team is not much better but I hope I can still finish in the top 1000
Robertson named is welcome inclusion
@bighughie – Yes there is a way of ‘manipulating’ the split round to hedge your bets on your Captain choice, but it comes down to having the right players to do so… I’m still trying to get my head around it and personally won’t try it if there’s even a chance of me stuffing it up! It’s a ‘lockout loophole’ which was first realised prior to the Round 1 lockout.
I’ll TRY and explain – you nominate a player from Round 13A as VC and a player who is absolutely, definitely not playing in Round 13B as Captain – the catch is that the player in Round 13B has to be onfield (to be able to be nominated as Captain) and covered by an Emergency who is definitely playing.
Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, as I said, I’m still trying to get my head around it! :-)
Thanks for your thoughts on Brennan, Toby. I am quite tempted at that price, and i can now see him being more a liability to my team rather than an asset, so i probably won’t go there. A “frustrating pick-up” is the best way of putting it..
bighugh – The crux of the Captains “loop-hole” this week (as far as i know) is that because of the split round, they have allowed you to edit your team in the week in-between, as far as emergencies AND your Captain, if he hasn’t already played. But you won’t be able to alter anyone that has already played.
As an example. This week i will give the Vice Captaincy “VC” to Boyd and put the “C” on Bartel, as Jimmy is playing the week after. Therefore if Boyd delivers me a score i am satisfied with, (I’d say more than 110 or so) then after first weekend’s games i will take the “C” off of Bartel and put it on one of my bench players that i know is DEFINITELY not going to play. eg. Someone that’s injured or rookie that isn’t playing.
That way, if i’m confident Bartel won’t outscore Boyd as my my “VC”, it will give me Boyds’ double points.
So obviously, if Boyd scores a sub-100 i will leave the “C” on Bartel and hope that he can deliver a better score.
It’s almost like a double-chance of nailing a decent Captain, kinda… hehe
Hope that makes sense?
My mistake, i think Juzz is correct with his comments… you can’t give the C or VC to someone on your bench.
Damn, now i’m confused! hehe
wow lot of comments in all of that !
I haven’t done my trades for this weekend yet, ill wait till the teams get listed tomorrow. If White and Webbs both play then ill only do 1 trade (Maguire out). Im keen on doing the Scotland trade, but also the comment from dlow75 was quite interesting
Maguire > Gilbee, White > Grimes.
As far as rankings and winning leagues, everyone wants to get as high as possible. Obviously im a no show for the car, but i am currently third place in a private league which does have many on it.. and I’m keen to snatch that cash. I was knocked out in 2x private grand finals last year, so this year im keen to make a menze!
SO tomorrow will tell as to who is listed, and so i can make these decisions about listing my team.
Very good comments above, BUT now you can forget what they have told you and follow my lead !
The consensus that you need to make your 200k stretch over as many upgrades as you can is good advice. This week you need to upgrade simon white + maguire.
Webberly should play more than white throughout the rest of the season and upgrading white will give you an extra 40k to play with.
White -> Cornes. At $228k Cornes does have a risk factor to him but he should be averaging 75 for the rest of the season. (This will leave you with $194k remaining)
Then
Maguire -> Carrazzo. Once again he has the risk factor but you need to be taking the risks to make your cash last so you can upgrade all these rookies on your field. (this will leave you with around $150k in your bank)
Next Week.
You need to upgrade bastinac -> mitchell. He is great value at $370k ! (This will leave you with around 50k in your bank)
You use your $50k to upgrade fyfe to a good value forward like Goodes ($333k) or Harvey ($350k) – depends on what happens to everyone’s value next week.
Brown should be back around now or the following week, in which case grant goes to your bench
You will have 2 trades remaining with 0 cash in bank. These trades are crucial for the remainder of the season and should only be used if a player is injured for a long time.
If you have these 2 trades remaining in the finals, you can downgrade grant to a 77k player, make $180k and upgrade anyone you like.
YOU MUST use your $200k last over 4 trades to make sure you upgrade all your rookies on field and have enough trades remaining for injuries.
