Footy Tragic
Finals Strategy
Dear Footy Tragics,
With so many teams “complete” by Round 16, many DT coaches are asking what to do with those surplus trades over the last seven weeks of the season. At this point of the season, most teams start to focus on private league glory, as they come to realise that the car is out of reach, except for the top 300 teams overall. This week I talk about what to do with those remaining trades and how many you should keep for Rounds 19 – 22, DT finals!
My strategy, which has served me well in previous seasons, is to retain four, possibly even five trades for the finals. Assuming I finish top four, my trades over the last four weeks will be used in the following manner:
- Week 1 – Use two trades searching for a win and a rest in Week 2. I look for a two for one trade to bring in an absolute gun;
- Week 2 – Hold fire (assuming you win Week 1);
- Week 3 – Use one to two trades (the Preliminary Final is arguably harder to win than the GF, because teams often use their remaining trades in the lead up to this final). Look for another two for one trade, or simply replace an injured or rested premium.
- Week 4 – Use one trade to replace an injured or rested premium.
If you finish 5 – 8, you must go for broke because there is no second chance.
Do not underestimate injuries or restings in the latter part of the season. We must remember that Mark Thompson and Ross Lyon are not concerned with our DT’s. If Gary Ablett, Paul Chapman, Jimmy Bartel, Leigh Montagna, Brendon Goddard, Lenny Hayes or Nick Dal Santo need a rest before the AFL finals, they will be given one between Rounds 19 – 22! Let’s not forget Round 19 last season, when St. Kilda rested all of their stars in the one week against Hawthorn, week 1 of DT finals.
The AFL season is long and brutal and all players at this point of the season are carrying various ailments and niggling injuries. AFL premierships are won in September, not August and clubs want their stars peaking during the finals series (AFL finals, not DT finals)! Don’t fall for the trap of thinking your current starting lineup of 22 players in Round 16 will be the same 22 players who get the job done for you in Rounds 19, 20, 21 and 22.
One week is a long time in football, which makes seven weeks an eternity. You’ve been warned.
Good luck!

Hi Ben, got a question for you. My team is set, weaknesses are shaw, carrazzo, mitch Clark, and maybe Gia/Higgins/pods. I have 6 trades and 170k, and am thinking about bringing Sylvia in for hitchcock – the idea being that I will have a spare mid/fwd gun to cover any players getting rested in rd19/20…
If one of my guns gets rested in one of those weeks then I figure I won’t want to trade him out as I will want him the following week, so better to bring in good bench cover, particularly when sylvia is T such an attractive price….
Is this the right approach, or am I better to save the trades, because syvlvia could get injured?
Bluebottle
Forget about Sylvia. He’s points difference is not great enough to improve your team.
You would be better off doing double trades and off loading someone like Pods and upgrading to the best player not currently in your side.. ie DT GUNS
Gary Ablett, Paul Chapman, Jimmy Bartel, Leigh Montagna, Brendon Goddard, Lenny Hayes or Nick Dal Santo as mentioned above…. upgrading to these players is the best way to improve your scoring.
ie Higgins averages about 80 but Chapman averages about 120. Your team will be 40 points better off. If you get Sylvia who might average 90 you’ve used up a trade and only improved your side by 10 points…
Good luck trading
thanks for Sharing your Strategy Ben it sounds like a pretty good one.
I dont think i will be following it though since i have decided to get rid of Hille due to his injury and by doing this i can get Goddard in aswell with 2 trades.
The question is who do i trade hille to?(must be under 277k to be able to get goodard)
Im thinking of either Sam Jacobs, Dean Brogan or Michael Gardiner? (i all ready have skipper who will avg around the same as the above)(this will leave me with 3 trades)(thanks to everyone that helped out yesterday)
maanco, Skipper has been scoring reasonably well. Have you considered trading Hille to a $77k rookie to make some cash and leaving Skipper on you field?
greg i actually have but if skipper gets injured or gets dropped im stuffed and i will have one less trade
but then again that money could upgrade Shaw to Lake and Betts to Chapman but that would leave me with 1 trade and over 100k in the bank
i think i might do it and hope for the best!
Bluebottle, I’m a massive fan of Col Sylvia, but in my opinion he is too expensive for an 8th forward option. Any DT with Sylvia would be crazy to not have him in their starting 22.
If you are in a strong league position, my advice would be to hold fire until the lead up to Round 19. As long as you have sufficient trades at this point, you will be able to make the necessary adjustments to your DT when the Round 19 teams come out.
