Dear Neenie 21,
Thank you for submitting your team. Overall you have done a very good job constructing your squad of 30 players. To have 26 of our 30 players score points in Round 10 is an excellent effort. Add Michael Barlow this week and assuming Cameron Hitchcock passes a fitness test on his shoulder you will have 27. In addition, Rob Warnock and Matt Lobbe are showing solid form for the Northern Bullants and West Adelaide respectively, which leaves little Relton Roberts from Richmond the only dead duck in your team.
I feel your pain with Roberts as I went for the Podsiadly / Roberts combination as my 8th and 9th forwards prior to Round 1. After Round 10, Podsiadly is my number 1 forward based on averages while Relton Roberts is struggling for form and has gone from playing AFL football to VFL reserves for the Coburg Tigers in the space of just seven weeks! Roberts has been clearly my worst selection since John Meesen in 2008. Meesen holds the unenviable record of being the only player I have ever selected who has gone through an entire season without scoring a single point! At least Roberts has played two games, despite the fact they were far from impressive.
Back to your team Neenie and let’s focus on your next 12 rounds. I’m very concerned about your lack of trades remaining. It will be a tough ask trying to avoid a donut over the next 12 rounds with only six trades up your sleeve. Your solid squad of 29 players will help you get through but I suspect your team will be running on fumes by Rounds 20 – 22 unless you go into conservation mode over the next four weeks.
I can see that you have used your 14 trades thus far wisely, but I strongly encourage you to hold fire for the next month. Even if Hitchcock does not get up for this round, avoid the temptation to bring in cover into your forward line.
Another reason for not trading is I cannot see any real stand outs to bring in this week that have played two games. Nathan O’Keefe and Daniel Stewart could turn out to be handy back up options, but I’m far from sold on both of them. The fact that O’Keefe is 193cms and Stewart is 200cms also concerns me because young developing key position players / ruckman take longer to develop than midfielders. Having said that, if anyone out there can think of a compelling reason to bring in one of these two players I’d be happy to hear it.
Good luck!

The only compelling reason is the need to upgrade the forward line.
There are almost no potential downgrade targets left, and although I realise the point about only bringing in people who are going to play the rest of the season, surely if it takes you a NOK to get to a Chappy now, then you pull the trigger?
I realise that Chapman will be on the way down in the next couple of weeks, but surely there is an advantage in upgrading a Hitchcock/Gumbleton type player to get a couple of 100s in a row is worth it…?
Is anyone else’s forward line struggling?
everyone’s forward line is struggling my friend.
With Bower close to return and Webberley on my bench, i’m looking at Simon White –> Heath, and Gray –> Goodes.
Have Pavlich, ROK, Higgins, Gia, Pods, Ziebell, with Gumby to be permanent cover for the season and Relton Roberts clogging up my bench (Wade Thompson nightmare 2.0, the exact thing i tried to avoid this year..)
Can anyone advise on any other forwards better than Goodes? I don’t want Chapman as i have 5 geelong players already, and i’m scared of his hamstrings.
What about Didak?
Ben,
Thanks so much for reviewing my team!!!! I’ve just found your website and am very impressed thus far. Can’t wait for all the new DT info I’m going to get to hopefully give me the edge.
I was thinking about trading Hitchcock in but he’s got lots more money in him so; considering I have next to no trades left I’ll just play Watts and ope he starts getting some decent scores and then pull the trigger in a month (such a long time to wait for a trigger happy trader like me) but hopefully I’ll be able to swap him for a premium and then my team will be set leaving 5 trades for injuries.
Fingers Crossed!!!
Eebzzub, is that a rhetorical question? haha
When the Pod is your most reliable forward, as Ben mentioned, then it’s a worry..
Murph, would you be willing to get different and take the punt on Daisy Thomas? In saying that, it’s not really even a “punt” anymore. He is having a great year and i can no longer deny it! I tried to convince myself that his scoring has just been a flash-in-the-pan, but after 10 rounds with a 99 avg and coming of a whopping 145, 2010 is obviously his year.. so unless someone can advise you against him, i would strongly consider!
Otherwise, i would recommend his team mate in Didak, if you don’t want any more Cats.
Guys, Jack Trengove is currently my 7th mid, and im after opinions on whether a sideways trade to Hannebery has some merit, or if I need a clip across the head.
It would purely be a money making move, following Hannebery’s past 2x 100+ games giving him a breakeven of -17 (as opposed to Trengove’s BE of 77). In effect, it would be similar to doing a double trade to upgrade Trengove to a premium, but instead of the usual downgrade/upgrade double, it would be more of a sideways and then upgrade (on the same player).
Thought this idea might have some legs with the lack of rookie options coming through. Thoughts??
Wilson,
I have not considered Daisy, due to my overbearing bias against him. What is his current price? I can’t imagine picking him.
I will NOT consider Didak as I view him as too prone to the tag and is not as consistant as Goodes as a result.
The reason I am focused on Goodes atm is due to his attractive price and the fact I had a keen eye on him preseason, combined with the fact he is an amazing player. It will also leave me cash left over so I can upgrade Ziebell the following week/s.
Murph, Daisy’s current price is $383k.
I must admit, i probably couldn’t bring myself to pick him either but sometimes it pays to put personal preferences aside in cases like this.
I remember last year holding a petty grudge against just about ALL Hawthorn players (Being a Cats supporter myself) after the 2008 GF, and after Buddy had had such a horrid year for the most part, he really started to hit some form leading into DT finals time, and as he had bottomed-out absurdly by then, it was almost too hard to ignore his price..
So i bit the bullet and traded him in at about Round 15 or 16 and he came home like a train which really helped my team in finals, as most coaches in my league had gotten jack of his poor form and offloaded him by that time, so it worked really well in my favour.
Is there also any other reason why you wouldn’t consider any more Cats?
You can never have enough Cats, in my opinion! ;)
Don’t want to have to rely on Gumby when Chapmans hammys go twang. Also, I can’t afford him with one downgrade.
Secondly, i want one downgrade to cover two upgrades, leaving me 6 trades for the remainder of the season (holding waters & pods as keepers)
What does everyone think of Howlett’s job security this week? If he is out, ALL of my Ablett plans go out the window… Personally, i have a suspicion he will be out with a raft of returns due for the Bombers…
I’m saved if Moles plays though…
What is everyone else hoping to hear within the next hour??
who should i trade in Ablett, Montagna or Judd i have 580k to spend on a MID
Looks like Howlett is close to being dropped with Welsh back in the team, with Melksham & Colyer pushing for selection as well as Dyson returning from a knee injury. Good time for Gysberts to step up!
