Excellent work Scotty, love the deep statistical analysis, stuff that goes far beyond the obvious. Clear reasons to be optimistic for this season, and clear reasons to be pessimistic yet again. Ah the life of a Richmond supporter!

Also it's worth noting that Conca played with a stress fracture in his foot for many week, ultimately going to the long term injury list after week 17 or 18 from memory.

Quite an accurate analysis of our list. I wouldn't have thought that the untried (and twice rejected) A.Edwards would be played at F/F nor Riewoldt to line up at CHF. At the risk of sounding snipey, most of what you have written is fairly obvious given that the shortcomings that you have identified in the team have been publicly discussed by Hardwick and the football department, and subsequently acted upon via the draft and free agency.

Happened to catch Hardwick on TripleM this morning. As you can imagine, it was a really hard hitting interview.

Anyway, he was talking up the likes of Conca, Helbig and O'Hanlon as the ones who "need to step up."

You know. FWIW.

@DIG Thanks mate, appreciate it. Definite concerns still regarding the forward line. There's no standout guy to fill their gaping hole but plenty of options to pinch hit.

@2001leaguechamps Haha, I think It's Mark Williams. We can't use AFL licensed media so you have to get creative every now and again.

Also, what is the photo for this article in the cover page? It makes me laugh every time I pop in and confuses me to my very core. Did someone just throw two people and a ball into the same space? What is the old guy even looking at?

scotty..your witting and analysing id so far superior than anyone in the media its insane..get a job at the age mate
excelent and quite spot on report of the tigers.
with batchelor, griffiths, and two very interesting and exciting youngsters in HELBIG AND OHANNLON not in your team i can see some depth in the team...along with CONCA who was excellent in the all stars game..if he martin and ellis step up to the task this year and those new recruits in knights, petard, edwards can get amongst the goals i think the tigers will be in for a big year.....but the main worry is there is no back up if maric goes down..he is the key..or he is the achillies heal

Great article again mate, I think their forward line will let them down again this year, despite the improvements they should make elsewhere.

@2011leaguechamps Thank you! I'm a huge fan of words, we go way back. I'm glad our relationship finally shines through in public.

I think in part you may have answered your own question. Richmond failing to purchase and fill a nearby suburb with recruiting staff and analysts is more than likely the catalyst for Carlton's curse level dominance over the Tigers in round one contests.

On a serious note you hit the nail on the head with the Richmond hype early in the year. They've been talked up and failed to deliver for the good part of half a decade now yet we still buy in. I think it's just a combination of a large enthusiastic fanbase and a desire for some damn footy. The summer break clouds judgement and us AFL supporters are loyal to the core, we'll buy in on anything and label any kid who shows a bit as the second coming. It's just the harmless nature of the fan.

I think this Richmond side is better prepared than any other over the last four years, but I don't think they're as good as Carlton. Not this year.

Scotty, your writing style and tweets are, well, excellent. You have mad skills with the words.

As a dude who works in an office, I don't really understand Richmond's trading strategy. I'm concerned they don't have enough committees or working groups making decisions. I'd suggest adding 7.

Is there any reason why Richmond traditionally starts the season off fairly weakly? As a Blues supporter, the Richmond preseason always sounds intimidating, and at least for the last four years the Blues have won without too much effort.
