Pre-Season Weekly Wrap: Geelong – North Melbourne

Week commencing 14/01/13:

It has been a weird first week back of pre season 2013. Geelong & North Melbourne held a joint training session, presumably so the Scott brothers could complete every pair of identical twins fantasy of playing ‘swapsies’ and seeing if people would notice. 2013 has been unfortunate for the Hawks copping a colossal pounding from lady luck with a gun recruit spending a night in the clink, an Irish recruit that never was & a talented youngster cut down with another ACL injury. Things got even weirder late in the week when Jack Grimes was spotted looking injury free!

GEELONG CATS

Looking Good

Shane Kersten – moves extremely well for a big man and has filled out nicely. His skills were a standout on the track during the week. He had a good season in the VFL last year and is looking like he could get a taste of the big time in 2013.

Paul Chapman – for the second pre season in a row Chappy is looking very good. He has been able to complete most of the work so far this pre season and stood out on the track during the week.

Josh Caddy – his intensity was again outstanding on the track during the week. He is giving himself every chance of forcing his way into the Cats’ star studded midfield.

James Podsiadly – the J-Pod is looking good on the track. Interestingly he has spent much of the pre season with the defensive group.

Who’s Not?

Jared Rivers – was spotted training away from the main group during the week. Hopefully it isn’t anything serious but with Pods training with the defenders it’s clear that the Cats are worried about their KPD depth.

Hamish McIntosh – was sight unseen during the week. The former Roos’ ruckman hasn’t had a great pre season history so missing at this stage is pretty much par for the course.

GOLD COAST SUNS

Looking Good

Dion Prestia – has joined in with the main group after recovering from a hamstring injury. The young hardnut has impressed with his physicality on the track.

Jaeger O’Meara – this kid is a beast & is sure to become a favourite of many fantasy coaches. O’Meara’s track work has been top notch over the past week and pre season to date & he is looking cherry ripe to maul opposition midfields in 2013.

Sam Day – has put on some real mass this pre season and now has an AFL size frame. This has been his first uninterrupted pre season. The Suns will be hoping 2013 is the year that their young KPPs like Day can make their mark on the AFL.

Who’s Not?

Michael Rischitelli & Trent McKenzie – both starred in the Suns’ debut season but have since struggled with injury woes. Knee tendonitis has confined both of them to rehab for at least the next couple of weeks.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Tom Scully – has been one of the best trainers for the Giants during the pre season. It may not be worth the million dollar price tag in itself but the positive influence on young team mates as well as an increased on field output in 2013 will be invaluable to the young Giants.

Lachie Whitfield – has looked really good on the track this pre season. Spent 2 days last week at the AFLPA camp and looks likely to make an early season debut.

Who’s Not?

Setanta O’hAilpin – is still with the rehab group due to his ACL recovery. Big Carlos should join the main group in late January.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Jack Gunston – after a cracking debut season in the brown & gold, Norman is training the house down. Like fellow forward Luke Breust, Gunston is looking to boost his endurance by training with the midfield group.

Who’s Not?

Ciaran Kilkenny – after being much hyped throughout the pre season the young Irishman has made the decision to remain in Ireland & pursue his GAA career.

Brian Lake – the former Bulldogs’ full back was embarrassingly arrested in Sorrento for being drunk & disorderly.

Alex Woodward – tragically, ruptured his ACL for the 2nd consecutive pre season. 2013 hasn’t been kind to the Hawks so far.

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Looking Good

Dom Barry – is rake thin but has a touch of pace and class about him. He has been one of the Dees’ surprise packets this pre season & an early season debut wouldn’t be out of the question at this rate.

Dean Terlich – another SANFL product whose skills have impressed on the track during the week. He is a nice size and should play a half back sweeping role. He is definitely worth looking at during the NAB cup for fantasy coaches.

Dan Nicholson – has been outstanding over this pre season & is another potential fantasy bargain for AFL Dreamteam & SuperCoach players.

Jack Grimes – was spotted training with the main group during the week and was moving with total freedom and trained very well.

Who’s Not?

James Magner & Colin Sylvia – were spotted training away from the main group and were restricted to light duties.

Colin Garland – missed training during the week and with Lynden Dunn & potentially Tom Gillies breathing down his neck his position in Melbourne’s best team could be under threat.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Kieran Harper – has bulked up considerably to the tune of 7kgs over pre season and was outstanding on the track again last week.

Robbie Tarrant – is having his best pre season to date. After a shocking history with shoulder injuries, Tarrant was able to have his best season in 2012 & will be looking to improve further in 2013.

Majak Daw – perhaps the most hyped footballer to never play a game is looking to turn that around in 2013. While the Roos are well stocked for big men, the depature of Hamish McIntosh has left the Daw (nyuck nyuck nyuck) slightly ajar for Majak who trained strongly during the week.

Who’s Not?

Daniel Wells – has had a pre season interrupted by calf and achilles problems. At this rate we can probably expect a sluggish start to the season from Wells.

Clarkey’s Pre-Season Weekly Wrap – Part 5 (Feb 6 – Feb 12)

Less than a week to Nab action, a few clubs were on community camps this week and most held intra club matches.

ADELAIDE CROWS

Looking Good

Taylor Walker – took some very strong grabs one out in the Crows intra club match this week. His set shot kicking was also outstanding.

Rory Sloane – his intensity around the ball and at the man was fantastic during the scratch match, should be in for a ripper season.

Brent Reilly – was excellent off half back during match simulation. Luke Brown also stood out in defence and could play early in the season, he is worth watching out for in the Nab Cup.

Who’s Not?

Ben Rutten – underwent minor knee surgery during the week. This is a further blow to an already interrupted pre season for the Truck. He will more likely than not start the season slowly for the Crows.

Brodie Martin – was sidelined during Friday’s intra club match and was spotted running laps around the boundary, he is looking fit and strong but it is slightly worrying he is missing scratch matches at this point of the pre season.

BRISBANE LIONS

Looking Good

Billy Longer – has been pumped up by the Lions in the media this week. At 201cm & 101kgs he should be ready if one of Leuenberger or Hudson falls over.

Who’s Not?

Dayne Zorko is rumoured to be battling a hip injury, which should sideline him for about four weeks. The best case scenario is that we see him in the final week of the NAB Cup for a last ditch effort to push for their first game, but it’s a blow for his chances of a Round 1 debut.

There is not much news coming out of the Lions this week on the injury front. The club has had a good pre season and should have most players fit for round 1 at this rate (bar Brent Staker and Zorko).

CARLTON BLUES

The Blues went off for their community camp to Kyabram during the week.

Looking Good

Andrew Walker – continued to display great form during an intra club match last week. He looks to be in for a bumper 2012.

Robert Warnock – was the standout ruck on the track this week, seems to be over his injury woes.

Josh Bootsma – was also a standout on the track. With Sam Rowe suffering a setback and Jarrad Waite often injured, he could be a dark horse to grab a key forward role.

Who’s Not?

Michael Jamison – hurt his back at training earlier in the week. The club has denied rumours that he will be sidelined for up to two months and claim he will be right to start the season proper. His Nab Cup is in doubt though.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

Looking Good

Nick Maxwell – the re appointed skipper has been training well during the week and looks to have no signs of injury. He had an underwhelming 2011 due to a poor pre season and should find some form again this season going by his pre season form guide.

Ben Reid – has joined training after his off season shoulder injury. He is able to do most contact work and should play some part in the Nab Cup.

Who’s Not?

Alan Didak – has suffered an adductor injury (no, he’s not been out with gangsters again, apparently it’s a fancy term for a groin injury). After a previously uninterrupted pre season this is a disappointing blow for Didak.

Andrew Krakouer – has been given time off from the club to battle depression. Hopefully he can get back and recapture some of the form he displayed in the Grand Final.

Ben Johnson – has suffered a grade one tear to his hamstring and will miss 3-4 weeks, this probably shores up Marty Clarke’s position in the team.

ESSENDON BOMBERS

The Bombers were up in Maryborough during the week for their community camp and also had an intraclub match at Victoria Park where Kim Jong Hird actually allowed public access (as long as you hid under the seats).

Looking Good

Michael Ross – looks to have really bulked up and was moving quite well.

Brendan Lee – could be promoted from the rookie list if his intra club form is anything to go by, looks a ready made player.

Who’s Not?

Scott Gumbleton – surprise, surprise has been added to the long term injury list as a result of his back issues.

Brent Prismall – has also been added to the long term injury list after wrecking his knee against Collingwood last year.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

Looking Good

Jack Anthony – could be part of Freo’s preferred forward setup, was lively in the intra club practice match this week.

Aaron Sandilands – dominated the intra club but didn’t have much of an opponent. Impressive nonetheless.

Nathan Fyfe – dominated the midfield early and didn’t show any signs of lingering effects from his off season surgery.

Who’s Not?

Cam Sutcliffe – apparently has a stress fracture in his foot, which isn’t a good sign at all. That should put him out for some time, but may open the door for a Lee Spurr promotion off the rookie list.

Zac Dawson – looked really out of sorts and had a massive attack of the fumbles in the scratch match.

Jon Griffin – has been held back by knee tendonitis, the club remains confident he will be ready for round 1 as the preferred second ruck.

GEELONG CATS

The Cats are a bit cagey at the moment and only have a few open training sessions, so information is hard to come by. The club headed off to Portland at the weekend as part of its community camp.

Looking Good

Simon Hogan – looks set to get an opportunity as the principle tagger through the Nab Cup in the wake of Cameron Ling’s departure

GOLD COAST SUNS

The big news out of the Gold Coast this week is that the club is sending Josh Caddy, Sam Day, Josh Toy & Trent McKenzie to Arizona for 15 days. The quartet will miss all of the Nab Cup but should be right for round 1.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Callan Ward – killed it through the midfield and was a real leader in the intra club match

Curtley Hampton – young ‘Ambrose’ was the dominant player on the ground during the intra club match’s first quarter.

Chad Cornes – was played in a multitude of positions and took plenty of grabs and was a real general out on the field.

Setanta O’hAilpin – through the practice match he was the best forward target for the Giants.

Who’s Not?

Israel Folau – struggled to have much of an impact up forward during the intra club match which doesn’t augur well for Sheedy’s prediction of 30+ goals this season.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Jack Gunston – was lively up forward and was in the goals during the Hawks’ intra club match at Aurora Stadium during the week. With hot competition for spots in the Hawks’ forward line in 2012, Norman has done himself no harm with this performance.

Brad Hill, Cyril Rioli & Lance Franklin – were other outstanding players in the intra club match.

Who’s Not?

Bandaid Ellis – hurt his ankle in the intra club match and left the field straight away, he wasn’t spotted icing it on the boundary which should mean it isn’t too serious (or it is completely fire-trucked).

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Looking Good

Jack Watts – trained really well during the week, looks to have bulked up in the pre season and impressed with his pack splitting ability.

Nathan Jones – has impressed around the stoppages as usual and looked really sharp during the week

Who’s Not?

Aaron Davey – is still struggling with a dicky knee and looks to be on some sort of modified program.

Jordie McKenzie – is stuck in the rehab group for the second season in a row has had an interrupted pre season.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Ben Cunnington – looked really good at the stoppages during the club’s intra club match this week, has great hands in close, could be in for a breakout year.

Who’s Not?

Majak Daw – has been sent to train with VFL affiliate Werribee for breaching club protocol in recovering from a knee injury (which according to the Herald Sun, includes being a lunch cutter). With the Roo’s being well stocked for rucks this really shouldn’t affect the club’s 2012 campaign either way.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER

Looking Good

Darren Pfieffer – should be promoted to the senior list following Cam Hitchcock being placed on the LTI list.

Who’s Not?

Cameron Hitchcock – has been placed on the club’s long term injury list due to his shoulder injury.

Daniel Webb – injured his hamstring at training during the week and will not play in the Nab Cup.

RICHMOND TIGERS

Looking Good

Todd Elton – has been nominated by captain-in-waiting Trent Cotchin this week, as one to push for senior selection this year. Quite surprising given the club has Jack Riewoldt, Tyrone Vickery, Brad Miller & Tom Derickx on the books. Not great news for Brad Miller’s senior prospects if true.

Who’s Not?

Brett Deledio – has suffered a hamstring setback and will miss the early rounds of the Nab Cup.

ST KILDA SAINTS

Looking Good

Nick Riewoldt – has been reappointed as skipper for 2012 and has had a bumper pre season to date.

Tom Ledger – looked all class at the intra club match on Friday. He looked really good around the stoppages his hands, ball use and vision were all first rate, he should have an expanded midfield role in the Nab Cup.

Who’s Not?

Brendon Goddard – had minimal impact on the game on Friday playing through the midfield, while his direct opponent Seb Ross impressed for a young first year player.

SYDNEY SWANS

Looking Good

Adam Goodes – was typically impressive up forward during the intra club practice match.

Gary Rohan – G-Ro was very lively up forward in the Swans intra club practice match, after having some injury woes in his career to date this could be a massive year for the ranga from Cobram.

Who’s Not?

Matt Spangher – has suffered a hamstring tear and will miss up to 4-6 weeks. He will miss most of the Nab Cup.

Tom Mitchell – is recovering from knee surgery and will be unavailable for the Nab Cup.

WEST COAST EAGLES

Looking Good

Andrew Gaff – had a good session on Monday and impressed with his ball use and strength.

Josh Hill – looked good up forward and was impressive with his finishing.

Who’s Not?

No real news on the Eagles’ injury front.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Looking Good

Adam Cooney & Brian Lake – played 3 quarters of the intra club match and didn’t look to be effected by injury at all.

Shaun Higgins – was very impressive through the midfield and up forward during the intra club match. He could finally be ready to deliver on all of his promise!

Who’s Not?

Matthew Boyd – didn’t line up for the practice match because of what the club claims are to do with training loads. However, given he copped a knock a couple of weeks ago at training it could be something to keep an eye on.

Clarkey’s Pre-Season Weekly Wrap – Part 4 (Jan 30 – Feb 5)

Crows come to blows, Scotland snots someone in a pub and North & Melbourne are announcing captains – its beginning to look a lot like pre season!

ADELAIDE CROWS

Looking Good

Brad Crouch – has been given permission to play Nab Cup. Which is excellent for those of us in fantasy land who are tanking this year and want him next year!

Frothies Jaensch & Walker – reportedly started World War III during the week at training but anyone who saw footage of the supposed ‘brawl’ would know that it was only a bit of niggle and push & shove. Full marks for entertainment value but hopefully both of these cats can bring some intensity into real matches during the season.

Who’s Not?

Andy Otten – was restricted to walking laps following last week’s medial ligament strain.

BRISBANE LIONS

Looking Good

Jonathon Brown – has continued his strong pre season form during the week and the club has revealed that he will play more than he has in past years during this year’s Nab Cup. Good news for fantasy coaches who want to check his form before the season starts.

Josh Drummond – is back into modified training and will play during the Nab Cup (most likely for 5 minutes before he does a hammy).

Who’s Not?

Sam Docherty – is back on a modified training program and will be available for round 1, but won’t play Nab Cup so it will be hard for fantasy coaches to assess his form prior to the season.

CARLTON BLUES

Looking Good

Jarrad Waite – stepped back into full training this week which is certainly a boost for the Blues’ forward setup.

Jeff Garlett – trained with great energy and intensity on Friday.

Andrew Walker – continued his great pre season form during the week.

Who’s Not?

Matthew Watson – has been sluggish at times during this pre season and was reduced to walking laps during Friday’s open training session.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

Looking Good

Luke Ball – has been stellar all pre season and stood out on the track once again this week.

Who’s Not?

John Ceglar – looked a little worse for wear on Friday after copping an accidental knee to the head from Darren Jolly. He should be ok, maybe a couple of stiches.

ESSENDON BOMBERS

Looking Good

Jake Melksham – has had a good pre season and was singled out by coach James Hird during the week as one to watch in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Essendon have continued training behind closed doors and it is hard to get any injury information out of the club at the moment.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

Looking Good

Adam McPhee – was a standout in the club’s intraclub match this week in a tagging role and didn’t give an inch on his opponent, surely that will impress new coach Ross Lyon.

Hayden Crozier – did well in the intraclub match despite giving away strength and experience to opponent Jay Van Berlo. “The Croz” displayed outstanding evasive skills.

Jack Anthony – has lifted his intensity and his attitude is infinitely better. He was even involved in a bit of a blue with Hayden Ballantyne during the scratch match. Maybe he isn’t done with yet?

Who’s Not?

Zach Clarke – didn’t partake in the scratch match and was spotted running laps, wasn’t labouring so hopefully its only a niggle.

GEELONG CATS

Looking Good

Cameron Guthrie – has put on more muscle this pre season and has had another strong week on the track. With the Cats having several retirements and a few injury hiccups this pre season Guthrie may well force his way into the side.

Who’s Not?

David Wojcinski – has injured his foot and is in doubt for the start of the season, the silver lining is that this may give further opportunities to similar type players such as Taylor Hunt & Jordan Schroeder.

GOLD COAST SUNS

Looking Good

Jaeger O’Meara – has been given permission to play in the Nab Cup ala Brad Crouch.

Trent McKenzie – is on track to start round 1 despite an interrupted pre season. McKenzie has spent significant time either in the rehab group or on a modified program, with a knee issue.

Who’s Not?

Brandon Matera – missed a session this week and has had groin issues dating back to July. Despite this setback the club expects him to be ready for round 1.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Callan Ward & Luke Power – have been pacesetters at training and are expected to be announced as club co-captains sooner rather than later.

Who’s Not?

Tom Scully – he may well reach the Forbes “Richest Under 21” list but from publicity shots early this week its clear that the boy is cutting his own hair.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Shane Savage – another week and another scratch match with the Tiges, Savage was particularly impressive through the middle.

Luke Breust – was another to play well in the praccy match, should take his game to the next level this year, based on pre season form.

Who’s Not?

Ryan Schoenmakers – still looks unsure of himself in the contest. Is only 21 but with Hawthorn having a real chance at the flag this year he wouldn’t want to continue making schoolboy errors.

Jack Gunston – has been quiet in both scratch matches in the past couple of weeks. With so much competition for spots in the Hawks’ forward line I’d say he probably isn’t in their round 1 side at the moment.

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Looking Good

Jack Grimes & Jack Trengove – were announced as co captains during the week, while both are impressive young footballers it is just as much of a statement about previous poor leadership at the club as the two Jacks leadership credentials.

Rory Taggert – the Dee’s first draft pick of 2011 impressed at training early in the week with his intensity at the ball.

Who’s Not?

Cale Morton – was awful during match simulation drills early last week, easily hassled off the ball and when he could dispose of it, his ball use was abysmal, will struggle for a game this year at this rate.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Andrew Swallow – has had a bumper pre season and was rewarded with the captaincy during the week.

Who’s Not?

Tom Curran – continues to struggle with a foot injury and may not be able to fully train for some time.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER

Looking Good

Chad Wingard – looked really classy during the week at training and is certainly one to watch during the Nab Cup.

Brad Ebert – has continued his good work on the track this week, $1.01 for the pre season B&F at Port.

Who’s Not?

Lobbe & Renouf – remain sidelined, however Renouf may be ready come round 1.

RICHMOND TIGERS

Looking Good

Jack Riewoldt – is almost back into full training loads after several bouts of surgery in the off season, he has done plenty of running and rehab work so he should be set for a big round 1 against the Blues.

Shane Edwards – in a modern day miracle has been able to bulk up this pre season.

Who’s Not?

Brett Deledio – circle jerk media speculation has commenced surrounding his future and contract status.

ST KILDA SAINTS

The Saints have been in closed sessions the past week and further news should come out of their open intraclub match on Friday February 10. Word is that Jamie Cripps will be one to watch in 2012.

SYDNEY SWANS

Looking Good

Trent Dennis-Lane – returned to training this week after a quad setback.

Who’s Not?

Tom Mitchell – SOB has been on a limited training program for most of the pre season.

WEST COAST EAGLES

Looking Good

Daniel Kerr – appears to have overcome his injury niggles and is almost doing full training loads

Mark LeCras – looked really sharp training with the midfield group during the week.

Who’s Not?

Andrew Embley – has hurt his shoulder and will be unable to return to training for up to 6 weeks.

Will Schofield – sat out last Monday’s session with general soreness.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Looking Good

Jack Redpath & Clay Smith – the two youngsters have really impressed on the track with their hardness. Should really be looked at by fantasy coaches.

Who’s Not?

Dale Morris – is really struggling in his comeback from a broken leg and at this stage will not be available for selection until at least 5 weeks into the season proper.

Clarkey’s Pre-Season Weekly Wrap – Part 3 (Jan 23 – Jan 29)

You know the drill by now…. Part III, who’s looking good & who isn’t at your club this week…

ADELAIDE CROWS

Looking Good

Luke Thompson – the key defender was able to participate in full training this week after having ankle problems over the pre season.

Sam Kerridge – continues to impress on the track this week as he has done throughout the pre season. With a big body and appetite for the contest, watch out for this youngster during the Nab cup.

Who’s Not?

Andy Otten – suffered a knee setback at training this week. At first it was thought that he may have reinjured his ACL. It turned out to be only a medial ligament strain but he is in doubt for the Nab cup.

BRISBANE LIONS

Looking Good

Dayne Zorko – could be one of the steals of the 2011 off season. He looks a certain starter in 2012 most likely in a small forwards role. Zorko’s pace, strength & goal nous really stood out at training this week.

Who’s Not?

Josh Drummond – continues to be the Lions’ perma-bandaid.

CARLTON BLUES

Looking Good

Kane Lucas – has been moving well this pre season and has had another good week on the track. After an injury plagued 2011, Lucas is cheaply priced in fantasy competitions this year and is well worth a look at in the Nab Cup.

Bryce Gibbs, Chris Judd & Marc Murphy – all looked in good nick on the track this week. Judd looks to have trimmed down this pre season and could have more of an outside role this season than in previous years at the Blues.

Who’s Not?

Luke Mitchell – reinjured his shoulder during the week. A full reconstruction will see the youngster miss up to 16 weeks of training.

Sam Rowe – also injured his shoulder during the week. It won’t require surgery but will disrupt his training in the short term.

Nick Duigan – had cartilage removed from his knee during the week and will miss up to 5-6 weeks of full training.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

Looking Good

Andrew Krakouer – was looking fit after rejoining training this week. After missing altitude training in Arizona and not being sighted during many training hit outs so far this season, he has shown discipline in keeping himself fit.

Dale Thomas – has gotten rid of the pretty boy hairdo and looks in good nick out on the track this week.

Who’s Not?

There is not much news on the injury front at Collingwood this week but Ben Reid continues his rehab after his off-season shoulder injury.

ESSENDON BOMBERS

The Bombers have been typically cagey this week and there is not much information coming out of the club this week apart from their upcoming annual rubbish cricket match. Will Lloydy play? Will Scott Gumbleton crash a segway? Who knows, who cares?

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

Looking Good

Nathan Fyfe – has increased his training loads this week and looked really good and most importantly is moving well.

Nick Suban – trained well and looks to be the club’s designated kicker in for 2012.

Matthew Pavlich – trained strongly during the week putting some young Dockers through their paces

Who’s Not?

Lee Spurr – wasn’t sighted on the track this week and has made fleeting appearances since new years. Is either on a modified program or injured, not one to pick for dream team.

GEELONG CATS

Looking Good

George Horlin-Smith – the man with two dads has trained solidly this week. After an injury plagued 2011, the hyphen is setting his sights on a senior debut in 2012. He is one to look out for in the Nab Cup although it is hard to see him breaking into such a strong line up in this year’s H&A season.

Billie Smedts & Jordan Schroeder – are also looking good things to play Nab Cup. Schroeder has a bit of the old “barrel chest, pigeon legs” about him, he looks a certain cult figure.

Who’s Not?

Travis Varcoe – was a no show on Friday the 20/1 & last week it was confirmed that the midfielder/forward has suffered stress fractures and will miss the start of the season proper.

GOLD COAST SUNS

A bit ho-hum on the GC front this week, the club has no real long term injury news and it’s the same names lighting up training; 1) G 2) Ablett.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Liam Sumner & Nick Haynes – the first round draft picks are training well and look set to make their debuts early in the season.

Who’s Not?

Taylor Adams – the 2011 no. 13 draft pick was questioned by police over an altercation at a Geelong bar during the week. No word yet if there will be any sanctions imposed upon the young midfielder.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Alex Woodward – stood out with his extraction ability in a scratch match against some Tigers’ youngsters this week. Has been mentored by Sam Mitchell this pre season and looks a ready made in and under replacement should the Hawks’ midfield suffer injury blows during the season.

Derick Wanganeen – looks to be another lively small forward. He displayed good intensity, pace and skill in the Tigers match. With Cyril Rioli, Isaac Smith, Brad Hill, Luke Breust and Amos Frank all training well this pre season there will be some hot competition for the medium/small forward role in the Hawks line up in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Xavier Ellis – had his calf bandaged at training during the week and could not participate in the main drills.

Luke Hodge – appears to be on a modified program. May start the season sluggishly.

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Looking Good

Jack Grimes – is back training with the main group and is looking good which is top news for fantasy football coaches.

James Magner – another good week on the track, really wants a spot at AFL level (unusual for a Melbourne player).

Dan Nicholson – his chasing and harassing have been good all pre season not to mention this week. Looks a certainty to be promoted off the rookie list.

Who’s Not?

Max Gawn – will begin light training again soon after undergoing his second knee reconstruction.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Brent Harvey – was tearing up the track during the week, the pugnacious 34 year old is setting the pace for the whole group.

Robbie Tarrant – looks fit and strong and really stood out in competitive marking drills during the week. Given that the sight of him fit is generally less common than sightings of the abominable snowman in the Simpson Desert during summer, that is cause to celebrate

Who’s Not?

Ryan Bastinac – speculation is starting that he could be moving to GWS. He is said to be mates with moneybags $cully. A little bit of history repeating?

PORT ADELAIDE POWER

Looking Good

Hamish Hartlett – has returned to full training after a six month lay off. Hopefully for Port’s sake the youngster can improve on his career best return of 16 games in a season in 2012.

Brad Ebert & Travis Boak – have continued to train well during the week and are free of any injury niggles.

Who’s Not?

Tom Logan – copped a knock to the head at training and spent the rest of the session looking like King Tut after the pharaoh kicked the bucket. A little bit of blood was spilt but it’s hard to imagine him having recurring problems from this.

As reported last week half of Port’s listed ruck division remain sidelined.

RICHMOND TIGERS

Daniel Connors – looked pretty good up forward in the scratch match against the Hawks. Has ability but can he turn it round in 2012? Or will he go the way of the Morton?

Brandon Ellis – shone with his kicking out and hardness in the scratch match.

Who’s Not?

Matthew Arnot – almost caused a dust up after flooring Mitch Hallahan off the ball in the scratch match. Could be another Tiger who roars loudest in January?

ST KILDA SAINTS

Looking Good

Lenny Hayes – looks really good, participated in full training on Wednesday and doesn’t appear to be impeded by his 2011 knee reconstruction

Brendon Goddard – despite having his knee iced towards the end of Wednesday’s session, trained really strongly and should be a popular fantasy selection once again in 2012.

Who’s Not?

James Gwilt – is still generally training away from the main group. Gwilt has been running with visible discomfort during the week after his 2011 knee injury.

Jack Steven – was training away from the main group during the week, doing running drills. Hopefully, he is just on a modified program after his break out 2011 season.

SYDNEY SWANS

The veterans are still leading the way for the Swans on the track this week while Dan Hannebury continues his comeback from minor knee surgery.

WEST COAST EAGLES

Not much news out of the west this week as the club had a few closed sessions.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Looking Good

Brian Lake & Adam Cooney – trained earlier in the week and looked good but missed a session later in the week. It seems as though both players are quite deliberately being held back this pre season. As long as neither suffer injury setbacks they are on track for round 1.

Who’s Not?

Tom Williams – was not sighted at training during the week. Given he has had an injury plagued career to date it isn’t a great sign that he can’t seem to join in full drills.

Clarkey’s Pre-Season Weekly Wrap – Part 2 (Jan 16 – Jan 22)

We’re now less than a month away from round 1 of the NAB Cup. Exciting times! So here’s what has gone on at your club the past week and most importantly who is looking good and who is Tambling it up.

ADELAIDE CROWS

Brenton Sanderson turned the intensity up a notch at West Lakes this week. Several of the Crows’ senior players were of the opinion that Monday was one of the hardest sessions they have ever done at the club. Interesting given that old mate Neil Craig had a reputation for somewhat uberflogging his players.

Looking Good

Nathan Van Berlo – is shining on the track. Coach Brenton Sanderson has left it in no doubt that he will captain the club again in 2012. Van Berlo’s intensity during pre season has impressed the new coaching staff.

Luke Brown – continues to impress on the track this pre season. The 19 year old Norwood recruit has a penchant for biffo as displayed during the club’s boxing sessions this week. He is surely one to look out for in the NAB Cup and being DP Back/Forward in 2012, his fantasy stocks will surely be rising.

Who’s Not?

Luke Thompson – had his ankle immobilised over the Christmas break and is not expected to return to training for a week. With Ben Rutten also carrying a niggling knee injury throughout the pre season the Crows’ key defender stocks are being stretched at the moment.

BRISBANE LIONS

Looking Good

Aaron Cornelius – is training with high intensity this pre season. With the skipper fighting fit, the addition of Jordan Lisle to the squad and Patrick Karnezis late season 2011 form, AC will have some real competition for a key forward role. His form on the track is a solid start.

Ryan Harwood – is training solidly, with an influx of talented youngsters vying for midfield spots this hardnut is putting his name forward for an early season midfield role.

Callum Bartlett, Daniel Merrett & Jonathon Brown – have continued their strong form on the track this week. Brown in particular should be a real cash cow early in the fantasy football season if he can avoid freak injuries.

Who’s Not?

Sam Docherty & Josh Drummond – are still the only Lions listed players in the rehab group. However, the former believes he should be able to participate in some NAB action which is heartening for FF coaches.

CARLTON BLUES

The Blues had a lighter week on the track this week with a time trial around Princes Park on Monday & lighter sessions later in the week. After doing some heavy loading pre Christmas including an elite training camp in Dubai, the Blues seem to be easing the load in the lead up to the NAB Cup.

Looking Good

Bryce Gibbs – continues to be the golden boy this summer, another massive wrap this week from his captain Chris Jud who believes the 2006 no 1 pick is ready to explode in 2012.

Ed Curnow – was a star in winning the time trial earlier in the week. Is really looking to get his spot back in the Blues midfield after a shoulder injury derailed his 2011 campaign following a bright start.

Andrew Walker, Tom Bell & Frazer Dale – all performed really well in the Blues time trial during the week. Bell in particular looks a meataxe, he could be a real smoky in 2012.

Levi Casboult – has looked really good on the track this week & all summer for that matter. The 2009 Booze Cruise champion could be a show for a key forward position at some stage in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Chris Judd – should resume contact training very soon after his pre Christmas shoulder injury. Is still very much in the frame for NAB Cup & Round 1.

Jordan Russell – left a training session early clutching his buttock. While this injury appears to be very minor, JR seems to be quite injury prone at this point of his career which isn’t good considering the competition for half back spots at Princes Park at the moment.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

The Maggies also had a light week on the track. The first year players went on a bonding camp to Tasmania earlier in the week with a light session at Aurora Stadium.

Looking Good

Nathan Brown – appears to have fully recovered from his knee reconstruction last year. Is moving well and looking very fit, which is a good sign for the Pies defence.

Jarrod Witts – the baby giant has been noticeable on the track for obvious reasons. He is often seen still training after other players have left the track which is impressive for someone so early into his career. Really wants that second ruck spot, he also has the agility to play forward.

Who’s Not?

Ben Reid – is still consigned to gym work after his early pre season shoulder injury. Is still in the frame for NAB appearances though.

ESSENDON BOMBERS

Looking Good

Brent Stanton – has had yet another solid pre season to date and has displayed good intensity on the track during the week. With an uninterrupted pre season to date Stanton could prove popular again with FF coaches if not with his own fans!

Dustin Fletcher – Apparently, Old Man River is what he used to be! Despite being almost older than time itself Fletcher has been able to participate in almost full training loads during the season. He could go on for a few seasons yet!

Who’s Not?

Hurbleton – the Bomber bookends continue to be either in rehab or on modified programs due to injuries this pre season.

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

No problems with Freo’s commitment on the track this week with most of the players stepping out for match simulation in the pissing rain on Friday!

Looking Good

Lachie Neale – was a standout at training during the week, a real disposal accumulator during match simulation. With Fyfe struggling, this youngster should be one to watch through the NAB Cup. Could be an interesting unique rookie for fantasy coaches, whispers are that Ross Lyon is a real fan!

Jayden Pitt – has also been a star at training during the week. The youngster has displayed great poise and skill during competitive drills and should be another one to look out for in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Jack Anthony – is really just stinking the joint up! Has been fatiguing early during most of the pre season work and rumours are still abound about possible attitude problems. He has ability but really needs to lift his game.

GEELONG CATS

The reigning premiers had their first open session on Friday last week at Skilled Stadium.

Looking Good

Mitch Brown – again looked fit and was moving well on Friday. Interestingly, he was training with the defenders group – could this signal a change of role in 2012?

Orren Stephenson – trained strongly under the watchful eye of new ruck coach Brad Ottens. Big bodied and agile, others may disagree but I believe he will be the Cats number one ruck this season.

Who’s Not?

Nathan Vardy – is looking a bit better this week having resumed some light duties but in my opinion is behind the eight ball given; his already limited pre season, competition from West and Stephenson as well as his young body.

Travis Varcoe – was a no show on Friday at training. There has been no word of an injury to date so hopefully he is simply on a modified program.

GOLD COAST SUNS

The Gold Coast boys were spotted flexing some muscles down at the beach this week in addition to a few competitive training sessions.

Looking Good

Matthew Warnock – has been dishing out some punishment to the Suns’ young talls in competitive work during the week. The former Dee looks a shoo-in to be the Suns full back this coming season.

Karmichael Hunt – Special K is looking leaner and meaner this pre season. Apparently this is the result of a low carb Atkins-style diet. It would be kool if this helps K not be as krap as last season.

Who’s Not?

Josh Caddy – has suffered a hip flexor injury. It doesn’t seem dire or as if he will miss too much training or footy. However, it is really disappointing that this talented youngster can’t seem to catch a lucky break with injury in his short career to date.

Jack Hutchins – is currently on a restricted program. He suffered a near calamity earlier in the pre season with what looked like a certain ACL injury. Luckily this wasn’t the case and the follicly unchallenged youngster was spotted running laps during the week at training.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Sam Reid – the former Bulldog toughnut has trained well this pre season. After being plagued with shoulder and groin injuries, Reid should easily be able to grab a spot in the AFL’s newest franchise.

Tom Scully & Callan Ward – have continued to train strongly this week. These two players will be important in ensuring the Giants don’t have too many cricket scores kicked against them in 2012.

Nick Haynes – has also set a cracking pace at training during the week. Look out for this rookie during the NAB Cup, could be a handy fantasy pick up.

Who’s Not?

Kevin Sheedy – direct quote from Sam Reid this week: “Choco’s been taking most of the training.” After letting Williams do pretty much all of the work in the NEAFL last year, while he was swanning around the world on AFL sponsored junkets, you might think Sheeds would want to stamp his authority on the group prior to round 1. Instead, he’s still spouting crap from the rooftops!

Can we just call Mark Williams the coach and KS the PR officer (Minister for Information) and end this farce? “Oh but they need him for the publicity and membership drive” they say? 4000 odd members from a geographic area with a population similar to Melbourne, 3 weeks out from the NAB Cup is what I say.

Honestly. Ivan Milat could do a better job of recruiting people to the cause at least he is a local (somewhat), well known in Sydney, hands on and more importantly cheaper than Sheedy.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Lance Franklin – all FF coaches should have another serious case of Buddy love this season. The Hawks’ spearhead is fighting fit and has stood out during competitive drills during the week.

Sam Mitchell – continues to train extremely well and is looking really ripped. He was seen with a small group of players (mostly first year) staying back and doing centre square drills with the young rucks. Great commitment from the former skipper.

Cyril Rioli – seems to be fit and has made the competitive stuff look easy during the week. Hopefully, this can be his break out year.

Who’s Not?

Brad Sewell – was unable to do the competitive work this week and had his thumb heavily bandaged at Friday’s session.

Josh Gibson – was similarly restricted to lapwork during the week. Not to mention a ridiculous Mohawk style do which makes him look like a chav.

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Melbourne’s Friday session revolved mainly around stoppage drills – an area the club has been particularly poor at in the past few years. After reportedly leaving Gosch’s Paddock session due to rain the previous week whilst the Maggies were still out there training, it is heartening that the intensity went up a little this week.

Looking Good

James Magner & Rory Taggert – both youngsters have a real presence and intensity about them on the track. Big, confident and strong around the stoppages, one or both could break into the side given Tom Scully’s defection and Melbourne’s current 3rd world midfield.

Aaron Davey – trained mainly with the forwards group during the week and looked a class above. His skill and poise really stood out and most importantly he looks very fit. Hopefully he can have an impact as a crumbing/defensive small forward in 2012.

Jeremy Howe – looks to have added a bit more muscle to his physique but is still very lively on the track. Really should nail down his spot in Melbourne’s forward in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Luke Tapscott – was still restricted to lapwork this week. With a hip injury in his first year and chronic hammies last year, hopefully he is just on a modified program. Would expect him to be rusty early in the season.

Matthew Bate – was unseen at training on Friday. Given his form on the track in this pre season so far it would be devastating for the big red fire crotch if he were to break down now.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Daniel Wells – trained really well during the week. Is excelling at all of the track work, typically his skill and poise really stood out. Exciting news for North fans when you consider his health scare last September. Could be a really good fantasy option if he keeps it up.

Jack Ziebell – continues to train strongly and has typically stood out during the competitive work. Could he be 2012’s Andrew Swallow in a fantasy sense?

Who’s Not?

Cam Richardson – was training away from the main group at stages during the week. Given last year, we can safely assume that Brad Scott hates him so he is definitely a fantasy risk when you consider these factors.

Ayden Kennedy – was restricted to light duties during the week after feeling moderate pain in his reconstructed knee during a drill the week before. Will be in doubt for the NAB Cup if he can’t find confidence in his body.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER

Looking Good

Alipate Carlile – is ok after scans confirmed he didn’t actually tear his hamstring last week. However, given he apparently carried on like a goose after such a minor injury that had club medicos thinking it was a serious tear, you would seriously have to question his mental toughness.

Troy Chaplin – looks leaner, which could be a move to increase his running ability & perhaps a subtle role change. He should be one to watch for FF coaches during the Nab Cup.

Jarred Redden – looks fairly handy in ruck drills so far. He will need to be ready to rock n roll if Lobbe & Renouf cannot overcome their injury woes.

Who’s Not?

Nathan Blee – is training with the rehab group this week which is disappointing for the youngster given he has been one of the Power’s better trainers in the pre season to date.

Brent Renouf – is still restricted to very light lap work. Is currently battling knee tendonitis and will miss round 1 of the NAB Cup. Have the Hawks sold another lemon?

Matthew Lobbe – will require hip surgery and looks set to miss up to 12 weeks which is a devastating blow for the club’s ruck stocks.

RICHMOND TIGERS

For more detailed Tiger news; be sure to check out KP’s excellent training report from last week.

Looking Good

Brandon Ellis & Bachar Houli – continue to impress and look to be taking kicking out responsibilities during match simulation. I expect both to be very fantasy relevant in 2012.

Tom Derickx – looks really good as a key forward prospect. He is big and strong and can clunk contested marks which should really relieve pressure on Jack Riewoldt in 2012.

Brett O’Hanlon – looked good up forward during the week. He could be the answer long term for the Tigers’ medium forward role after the trial and error of serial headcases Connors and Morton in recent years.

Who’s Not?

Trent Cotchin – was training with the rehab group during the week. His inability to ever have a good pre season doesn’t really seem to affect the midfield maestro on the field. Imagine what his output could be if he could get a full pre season in though!

Jack Riewoldt – is also training with the rehab group in a mirror image of his 2011 interrupted pre season. A bit like Cotchin he can still produce good footy without a pre season but surely it would help the Taswegian if he was more match ready in 2012.

ST KILDA SAINTS

The Saints were once again put through their paces with three closed sessions during the week. Their first open session of the new year is January 25th, however, here is a brief synopsis of what has been going on down at the Saints since October.

Looking Good

Jamie Cripps – contrary to last weeks wrap he is fine. The quad injury occurred during early December and he was back into training by the end of the month. Looks NAB Cup bound.

Lenny Hayes – is looking sharp after his 2011 knee reconstruction. Having done most of the training this pre season he looks to be an interesting fantasy option for those willing to take the punt this year.

Sebastian Ross – has been impressive on the track so far this summer. With a bigger body than most typical first year players he is certainly one to watch out for in the NAB cup.

Nick Riewoldt – hasn’t let a post season knee clean up affect his pre season to date. After a horror 2011 season in a FF sense he could be a real bargain in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Ben McEvoy – was unable to do much competitive work pre Christmas and seemed to be on some sort of rehab program. However, his running power hasn’t decreased and he has been an absolute time trial star for the Saints.

Nick Winmar – has been struggling with ankle complaints, which have disrupted the talented youngsters pre season.

Nick Dal Santo – injured his hand early in the pre season and wasn’t able to do much competitive work. However, given that skills with a football seem to come as naturally to him as riding a bike does to Lance Armstrong, I wouldn’t expect this to be a setback at all for NDS’ 2012 campaign.

SYDNEY SWANS

Looking Good

Mike Pyke – the big Canuck has had an uninterrupted pre season to date. With chronic quad problems derailing his 2011 season Pyke is looking to make amends by grabbing the number two ruck/forward spot in the team. With Mark Seaby perennially injured and Jesse White being a headcase, the man whose parents obviously had a cruel sense of humour could well be in the Swans best team come round 1.

Rhyce Shaw – has also had an uninterrupted pre season, the dashing defender looms as a good fantasy option in 2012.

Adam Goodes – the champion Swans has typically looked in good nick out on the track and is still one of the clubs fastest sprinters despite his age!

Who’s Not?

Dan Hannebury – underwent minor knee surgery this week in a blow to his pre season campaign. However, he is confident about making it back for the NAB Cup.

WEST COAST EAGLES

Looking Good

Fraser McIness – has really impressed throughout the course of the pre season and will surely play in the NAB Cup. However, given his natural position he may struggle for a spot in the Eagles best side given Eric MacKenzie & Will Schofield are more seasoned defenders.

Tom Swift – was spotted down at a Scarborough beach training session. He looks to have bulked up considerably. With Brad Ebert’s defection to Port, Swift could grab his place in the team.

Shannon Hurn – the meataxe from the west has been training well this week and has stated his ambition to play a bit more in the midfield. This is great news for fantasy coaches but terrible news for opposition midfielders who will have to combat the 186cm 98kg ball of muscle hurtling at them at the stoppages.

Who’s Not?

Daniel Kerr & Scott Selwood – were still in the (‘Ben Cousins Memorial’?) rehab group during the week. Hopefully the important midfielders can return to full training soon for the Eagles’ sake.

Beau Waters – was also training in the rehab group during the week. Surprise, surprise, great player and a good fantasy player but you would have to question his durability.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

Looking Good

Robert Murphy – completed full training during the week. When you consider his age and history with niggling injuries it is heartening to see him out there with the youngsters at this stage of the season.

Shaun Higgins – also participated in full training during the week. Higgins certainly is another player who has had his fair share of injury woes. Hopefully, for fantasy coaches he can have his best year yet in 2012.

Tom Williams – while he was training away from the main group during the week doing mainly running and kicking drills the key defender looks fit and ready to go. He surely can’t be that far away from full training unless he is on some sort of modified program.

Who’s Not?

Brian Lake & Adam Cooney – were unseen at Wednesday’s session. Cooney may well have been given the session off given that he has done most of the pre season work so far. Lake may also not be training because of his age, however, given his injury woes last season this doesn’t look a great start to 2012.

Clarkey’s Pre-Season Weekly Wrap – Part 1 (Jan 9 – Jan 15)

Note: We at Footy Tragic would like to thank James Clarke for this amazing article. James was an integral member of the Footy Tragic TV Show production team in 2011 and is a mad Demons supporter. His AFL knowledge is enormous and we look forward to working with him throughout 2012. Thanks Clarkey.

Welcome back to this article where we at Footy Tragic moderate the important information from the thousand of generally puff piece articles that are out this time of year about the pre season.

Millions of words and clichés are used during the off season and usually everyone is “flying” and “training the house down” or has had “their best pre season ever.”

This weekly article will give you all the basic pre season info you need leading up to Round 1 and more importantly the final selections of your fantasy teams. So here we are, season 2012, 18 clubs for the first time & who is looking good and who isn’t this pre season.

ADELAIDE CROWS

Looking Good

Patrick Dangerfield – always a risky fantasy selection and has generally proven a flop in all FF forms. However, he has been working extra hard on improving his endurance this pre season which could see him move into a midfield role on a more permanent basis under new coach Brenton Sanderson. Hopefully, this means Dangerfield can improve his uncontested possession game.

Michael Doughty – is the only senior player at the club to have done all of the preseason work this year. A factor in this would surely be that he is living year to year for a spot on the list; nevertheless a good preseason and the new coach could have a rejuvenating effect on such a player.

Josh Jenkins – has impressed with his fitness and work ethic. The former Bomber listed player’s pure agility could mean that he moves ahead of the likes of Shaun McKernan as the club’s no.2 ruck.

Similarly, new recruits Tom Lynch & Lewis Johnston have trained solidly over summer, one or both could have the potential to grab a KPP role in the new look Crows outfit. Youngsters Luke Brown, Mitch Grigg & Sam Kerridge have also impressed coaching staff with their output this preseason, look for these guys to form a new look midfield for the Crows in coming years!

Who’s Not?

Chris Knights – has again started the preseason sluggishly and has not been able to train with the main group regularly. Hopefully he can increase his workload in the coming weeks and have a strong 2012 season but as it stands he is very much heading into the Jason Porplyzia category of dubious fantasy player!

Sam Shaw – much like last year’s preseason he has been injured and underdone, with a raft of new young players coming into the club and the Crows bolstering their KPP stocks in the off season it’s just about crunch time for this young utility. Obviously being injured all the time won’t help him make it.

BRISBANE LIONS

Looking Good

Callum Bartlett – has begun training with the main group. After a horrific run with knee injuries it is very heartening to see this youngster get some sort of a lucky break. Bartlett is an inside bull and could form part of the nucleus of a very good future midfield for the Lions.

Daniel Merrett & Jonathon Brown – have been able to do most of the preseason work and have been real leaders on the track. This will be very heartening for Lions fans. Hopefully Brown can continue to have an injury free run but given his history there will forever be question marks on his durability.

Who’s Not?

Sam Docherty – has had to have hip surgery in the off season and will most likely miss the NAB cup. It must be very frustrating for fans of the club given the recent injury trials and tribulations of recent draftees Callum Bartlett and Jared Polec to see this young player also sidelined.

Josh Drummond – surprise, surprise! Is also suffering a hip ailment which will certainly cloud his immediate future but the silver lining is that only he and Sam Docherty are in the rehab group at the club (Brent Staker is also sidelined) which puts their list in an extremely healthy state.

CARLTON BLUES

Looking Good

Bryce Gibbs – is over his late season shoulder injury and has impressed this off season on the track. Coach Brett Ratten expects next year to be his break out year and to be pushing up to Chris Judd & Marc Murphy’s on field standards.

Matthew Kruezer – is also over late season his injury woes. With the cyst he was carrying now dissolved he has been able to complete most of the track work over summer and now looks a monty to reclaim his number 1 ruck role.

Andrew Walker – has unsurprisingly impressed again on the track with his fitness and intent, look for more goals this year from the freakish forward.

Who’s Not?

Chris Judd – probably being quite harsh here, because, the man always looks good on a football field whether he’s doing a calf stretch or eye gouging an opponent. Had an interrupted pre season because of a mystery bed related shoulder injury (* a cheerio to Mrs Judd). Has more recently rejoined training and given he probably came out of the womb with tape on his shoulders, he should still be right for a big 2012.

Jarrad Waite – unsurprisingly has managed to do very little track work this pre season and seems to lurch from one injury to the next. He is in doubt for the NAB cup at this stage.

Robbie Warnock – reduced to walking laps at training and will look to move into heavier work loads in the coming weeks.

COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES

Looking Good

Steele Sidebottom – has worked really hard on his endurance in the off season and is smashing pb time trial records. He will surely look to move into a more midfield oriented role in season 2012.

Alex Fasolo – is doing everything right so far to avoid the dreaded second year blues. Fasolo is already one of new coach Nathan Buckley’s favourites; he has done well in time trials and competitive drills so far.

Marty Clarke & Paul Cribbin – the international recruits have done well in the time trials so far this pre season. Clarke certainly has the ability to make it at AFL level it will be interesting to see if one or both can break into such a strong line up.

Who’s Not?

Ben Reid – a freak off season shoulder injury (unfortunately/fortunately it wasn’t in bed with Rebecca Judd) sent a scare through the Pies’ camp. Thankfully it didn’t require surgery and he should resume full training in the coming weeks.

Chris Tarrant – the old boy isn’t necessarily looking bad but has been sight unseen so far in pre season 2012. There is no news about an injury so we should assume he will resume training in the coming weeks.

ESSENDON BOMBERS

Looking Good

Elliot Kavanagh – considering his last year of juniors was injury plagued it’s just great to see him fit and on the track. However, he has exceeded expectations and has been one of the track leaders for the Bombers this pre season with his pace and skill. Could he be this year’s Dyson Heppell?

Angus Monfries – has shown great work ethic in the off season and has bulked up considerably. Hopefully for the Dons he can take the next step and cut his teeth as a consistent midfielder.

Jason Winderlich & Courtenay Dempsey – have come back strongly from their knee recos. Winderlich in particular is an important piece of the Bombers midfield puzzle.

Who’s Not?

Michael Hurley – has had a hamstring strain and is now on a modified program. The Bombers have wrapped him in cotton wool and captain Jobe Watson doesn’t expect he will play until quite late in the NAB Cup.

Scott Gumbleton – has had back surgery and is with the rehab group. This is quite possibly, the biggest surprise of the off season. Not!

FREMANTLE DOCKERS

Looking Good

Michael Barlow – has completed all of the pre season work and continues to come back strongly from that horror leg break in 2010. Has been very sharp in drill work and has also been doing well in the time trial stakes. At this rate Barlow will probably be the most popular fantasy player in 2012.

Luke McPharlin, Alex Silvagni & Antoni Grover – have all been outstanding on the track this off season. Leading the way for the other players this pre season and with Ross Lyon at the helm the Freo defence should be a very tough nut to crack in 2012.

Aaron Sandilands – has trained well and appears to be over his turf toe issues.

Who’s Not?

Nathan Fyfe – post season shoulder and groin surgery has really limited him this pre season. With endurance being his main strength he may be a somewhat limited player in the first half of 2012.

David Mundy – is still training with the rehab group and must be in doubt for the start of the NAB Cup.

Anthony Morabito – has struggled in his comeback from his 2011 knee reco and will surely be a doubtful starter in 2012. It’s a real shame for this talented youngster

GEELONG CATS

Looking Good

Paul Chapman – Chappy has been outstanding this pre season and has been able to complete most of the training. If his somewhat dubious hamstrings stay in tact the meatball is in for a huge 2012.

Mitch Brown – has also trained strongly and is tracking well for round 1 of the NAB Cup. The talented Brown could really cement a spot in the side with the retirement of Cameron Mooney and the injury cloud over James Podsiadly.

Billie Smedts, Jesse Stringer & Jordan Schroeder – have all had good pre seasons. Look for one of the S trio to break into the Cats midfield in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Nathan Vardy – is still on the indefinite list after injury last year. This further cements mature age recruit Orren Stephenson’s spot in the team.

James Podsiadly – has had a hard road back from a shoulder reconstruction. Should resume training in a few weeks on a modified program but is certainly in doubt for the season proper’s start.

Dawson Simpson – another young ruckman who has been sidelined he will undergo back surgery which will see him out for up to 3 months.

GOLD COAST SUNS

Looking Good

Josh Caddy – the almost Bomber is slowly but surely overcoming his injury issues and at this stage remains on track for round 1 of the NAB Cup.

Tom Lynch – has bulked up considerably and will be looking to further cement his status as the club’s number 1 key forward in 2012.

David Swallow – has looked all class on the training track this off season. Flew under the radar a bit last year in the press but the kid is an absolute jet.

Gary Ablett – needless to say given he is an excellent trainer, great news for all fantasy footy players, the little maestro looks in great nick.

Who’s Not?

Josh Toy & Brandon Matera – are part of the rehab group, which is disappointing. Hopefully they can find some fitness & form before the season proper starts.

GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY GIANTS

Looking Good

Tom Scully – ran a very good 3km time trial coming in first with a time of 9mins 37secs. Young team mates’ Tom Bugg & Steve Clifton were not all that far behind either!

Stephen Coniglio – took a trip to Umea, Sweden to have treatment on a troublesome knee and seems to be back on track. Is training with the main group and we should see him early in the NAB Cup.

Who’s Not?

Jonathon Patton – is heading over to Umea to have his knee looked at and may not be back until May! Very disappointing for those who wanted to see this youngster in action but potentially pleasing for masochists who now get to see Izzy Folau strut his stuff as the Giants key forward.

HAWTHORN HAWKS

Looking Good

Jarryd Roughead – seems to have recovered well from his achilles injury. Is currently on a restricted program but appears to be moving freely and should play at some stage in the NAB Cup.

Sam Mitchell – is leading the way on the track with his overall fitness and intent. The former skipper looks in fantastic condition.

Amos Frank – could be a real smoky early in the season. Looks to have the ability to be a good foil for Cyril Rioli – will watch with interest.

Brad Hill – has shown electrifying speed in the pre season so far (not to mention his attempted escape from police in Perth in December!).

Who’s Not?

Andrew Bosely – a very under developed KPP is doing it hard in competitive work against older more seasoned bodies. Zac Dawson Mk II?

Jarryd Boumann – looks very under developed for a more mature age recruit  -wouldn’t expect him to play at this rate.

Xavier Ellis – has been restricted to just bike work during this pre season. Really looks to be at the crossroads in his career.

MELBOURNE DEMONS

Looking Good

Matthew Bate – had some really impressive results with the pre-Christmas time trials and has consolidated this into good track work in 2012. Currently training strongly with the midfield group. Bate is showing early signs of becoming a rejuvenated player under Mark Neeld.

James Strauss – taking into consideration the horrific broken leg he suffered against Carlton it is somewhat of a surprise he is training at all at this stage. Amazingly Strauss is reportedly only a couple of weeks away from resuming full training he has excelled so far with the track work he has been given this pre season.

Mitch Clark – has been training with good intensity and more importantly is very fit. With Jack Watts also responding well to a pre season rocket from Neeld & Misson the Demons forward line is looking solid early doors.

Who’s Not?

Liam Jurrah – the dynamic forward has been sidelined with post season wrist surgery and is currently still in plaster. Whilst he has been able to keep up his fitness through running work, it will be interesting to see how he responds and what his role in the team will be given Mark Neeld’s defensive focus.

Joel Macdonald & Luke Tapscott – are currently in the rehab group and at times have been reduced to walking laps.

NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS

Looking Good

Ben Cunnington – is fit and firing early doors. As expected he has thrived in the competitive work dished out so far this pre season. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up these standards at AFL level.

Hamish McIntosh – has moved freely most of the pre season furthermore he has been impressive with his skill and intensity on the track. The big H is looming as a good fantasy pick at this early stage.

Kieran Harper – has looked a behemoth on the track during the pre season. Fit and strong, he is looking a sure thing to really cement a spot in North’s senior team.

Who’s Not?

Majak Daw – perhaps the most talked about man to have never played a senior game, Daw has struggled with injury and looks to have been given a modified program away from the main group.

Sam Wright – has struggled with a persistent foot injury and has not been able to train with the main group.

PORT ADELAIDE POWER

Looking Good

Brad Ebert – has probably been the standout performer this pre season at the club. Assistant coach Josh Carr has been really impressed with his intensity and fitness. Looks set to have an impact through the midfield in 2012.

Jay Schulz & Jackson Trengove – have displayed a lot of passion on the track during the preseason including attempting to belt the living suitcase out of one another!

Who’s Not?

Cameron Hitchcock – has had shoulder surgery and won’t be able to resume training for at least a fortnight.

Alipate Carlile – suffered a hamstring injury and is out for a minimum of 3 weeks which is a massive blow to Port’s defensive stocks

RICHMOND TIGERS

Looking Good

Kelvin Moore – is said to be making progress after several hip operations. If he can overcome his injury woes it would be a great boost to the Tigers’ defence, however, given his track record with injury question marks must remain over his durability. The long term nature of his injuries, most likely have taken some toll on his overall confidence and fitness.

Bachar Houli – has done really well in the pre season time trials. Young team mate Brandon Ellis has also been very impressive in this format.

Ben Griffiths – has been training strongly and the whispers are that he will take on a new role as a key defender in the new season.

Who’s Not?

It is hard to get information on which particular Richmond players are struggling this pre season, the feeling out of Punt Rd is very positive this preseason, stay tuned for next week’s update.

ST KILDA SAINTS

The bubble seems to be still well and truly in place down at the Saints this pre season. Apart from the positive feeling coming out of the club about new coach Scott Watters all that is really known is that young forward Jamie Cripps has torn a quad muscle which is disappointing for player and club.

SYDNEY SWANS

Looking Good

Ben McGlynn – has been working very hard on his fitness base this pre season and is really trying push into a midfield role this season. Expect big things from the mighty mouse in 2012!

Ted Richards & Martin Mattner – have been the real leaders on the training track this summer and have set the standard for the rest of the group. Both look like certain starters for the Swans this year.

Who’s Not?

Dan Hannebury – the promising young midfielder has been struck down by a knee injury. He will undergo minor surgery and looks doubtful for the NAB Cup.

WEST COAST EAGLES

Looking Good

Eric McKenzie – the young key defender hasn’t had any hiccups this pre season and is looking to be the long term replacement for the ageing Darren Glass.

Koby Stevens & Luke Shuey – have both had outstanding and most importantly injury free pre seasons to date and should both feature throughout the NAB Cup.

Murray Newman – the young draftee has really impressed with his speed, skill and agility on the training track. Newman could be a smoky to fill the Eagles’ need for a small forward in 2012.

Who’s Not?

Daniel Kerr – another casualty list regular Kerr has been restricted by finger surgery during the off season and has been on a limited program.

Scott Selwood – the young tagger has had back surgery during the off season and has only just resumed training. May start the year sluggish as a result.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

This summer has been pretty quiet on the media front out of Whitten Oval aside from word about new coach Brendan McCartney’s contested ball focus. In good news for the club Ryan Griffen has re-signed for a further 3 years and star on- baler Adam Cooney is said to be nearing top fitness after his knee issues.
