Footy Tragic
Captain Choice: Round 20
Dane Swan
2010 avg: 124.0
Avg last five games: 130.6
Last five vs. Ess: 105.4
Never doubt the Great Dane. A ripping 127 last week against the Cats shows, once again, that he is a big game player too. His rich vein of form continues and it’d be impossible to go against him at this stage. His form line is too good to ignore. The only downer you could put on it is that Essendon (he was tagged by Hocking) kept him to his lowest score of the season on ANZAC Day with an 83. It must be said that Essendon is one of the teams that restricts his DT scoring a bit, but I think that’s getting a bit too technical. He’ll chop.
Gary Ablett
2010 avg: 118.6
Avg last five games: 110.2
Last five vs. WB: 113.2
GAJ is still going along just fine, and if you’ve got him you’d have to be considering him every week (unless you have Swan locked). Picken tagged him a couple of times last year, but it didn’t stop him from scoring big. You’d still be expecting a 110 from him this week and there’s always the scope for him to go on with that. The Bulldogs don’t seem to mind Ablett getting his customary handball receives behind centre. There’s actually not a whole heap that screams Ablett to me this week, however he’d be at least a safe option.
Paul Chapman
2010 avg: 114.7
Avg last five games: 104.4
Last five vs. WB: 83.4
I’m mainly writing about Chappy to clear up his recent record against the Dogs. In two of the games last year (a 75 and a 47) he got an in game injury and was mothballed early. It makes it look like the Dogs have his number, but he’s actually always quite dangerous against the red, white and blue. His recent form hasn’t exactly been scintillating either, but he’s only scored below 100 twice this year. I’d be considering him roughly a top five pick for captains this week, but I’m starting to wonder if his body is getting a bit tired. Did you know that last week was the first time he’s played a Round 19 game since 2006? He also hasn’t played a Round 20 game since 2007.
Brendon Goddard
2010 avg: 112.1
Avg last five games: 110.8
Last five vs. NM: 96.8
Last year I made Goddard captain against the Kangaroos and he burnt me with an appalling 46. There was no injury either, he just played like a mongrel. One mark and only eight kicks. I’m still haunted by that game. It ruined an excellent captain picking season last year too. That one does seem to be an anomaly though, because since that day he’s scored 112 and 137 against the Roos. His recent form is great and he broke through for a good score against Port who, as I mentioned last week, generally keep him quiet. I also only just noticed his first name is spelled Brendon. I’ve been spelling it Brendan all along. “I’ve been calling her Krandle! Why didn’t somebody tell me?!”
Nick Riewoldt
2010 avg: 89.6
Avg last five games: 88.4
Last five vs. NM: 118.8
Is he officially back? Can we go there? Do we dare go there? I was one who actually named Riewoldt captain the night he did his hammy on 20 points. It was actually on the back of his amazing first two games of the season, including a 147 against the Roos in Round 2. Five games back from this injury and he’s starting to look like the Riewoldt we know and love (from a DT perspective anyway). He got his first ton post injury against Port on the weekend and with his killer form against the Roos you’d have to have a sneaky look at him. Because he can’t 100% be declared back in town yet, I’m calling him my smokey for the week.
Other notes
- Pendlebury’s highest career score is a 150 against Essendon on ANZAC Day 2008, but apart from that he’s never really dominated the Bombers.
- Nothing wrong with Montagna or Goodes this week. They’re both great options, but I’m just a little bit over writing about the same guys every week. Goodes has three straight tons against the Dockers and it’s late in the year, so you’d expect him to dominate. Montagna also has three straight tons against the Roos and four in his last five against them.
- Lenny doesn’t really do it for me this week, but I haven’t given him recognition in one of these articles yet, so just a general shout out to one of my favourites.
- Bartel’s recent form and his scoring history against the Dogs is very yo-yo like. Too hard to trust him with such an inconsistent form line. Still reckon that elbow is bothering him too. Why is he always wearing long sleeves now? Not that I’m complaining. The hoops on the Geelong L/S Guernsey make it look very retro. He should go all out and customise it to lace up and maybe get some mo growing tips from Pendles.
- Boyd generally struggles against Geelong – only one ton against them.
- Hodge has only scored 57 and 60 over the past fortnight. His form line against Melbourne is impossible to read. He scored 142 against them in Round 1 this year, but before that he hadn’t played them since 2007, when he only scored a 65. Safer options you’d say, even if he is every chance of coming out and blitzing.

New site looks tremendous guys!
Yeah, new site looks very schmick fellas! Nice work!
I clicked on my FT toolbar shortcut and thought it took me to the wrong site for a second… hehe
ps. Love the Simpson’s line, Dan! Classic!
Thanks very much guys! We feel like we’ve been promising it for so long it’s great to finally deliver the product to you! Have u checked out the player search function at the top? Notice u can add extra criteria, meaning u can find the perfect forward between $250k and $300k with a break-even of under 80! Search to your hearts content!! :-)
Absolutely sensational guys. Toby that player search function is brilliant, liking it a lot lads! Thumbs up.
Fellas, thoughts on Joel Corey and Jack Riewoldt at the moment? Looking at going on Toby’s theory from yesterdays article and offloading Jimmy and Pods for 2 more points of difference in my team. Also, Juddy has bottomed out a fair bit over the last few weeks and could be a chance to tear Richmond a new one. Considering him too..
Corey is an interesting one- he can score really well, but the issue is that bomber has said he is a week to week prospect re his fitness. I do quite like Judd as an option though… Riewoldt is probably best for his price but his run home is a bit iffy…
I wouoldnt trade Jimmy just for the sake of trading, its clear he isnt 100% but he was on 60 at halftime last week before getting 0 i the third q to stop him pumping out a ton, would also like to see his ToG…
Corey has every chance to be rested again so hes right for finals, i like the idea of judd more if you are going to trade.
Pods is a different story but Riewoldt is a little bit too much up and down, Richmond also have a couple of tricky games coming up which i expect to be his downs.
Liking the new features on the site guys, but when playing with the new search feature (think this wil be my new favourite feature cause its pretty awesome with the average/price movement/BE and you could even add expected price movement if avg scored to help plan trades) i searched defenders by avg score and bower comes up third on 111.5 average, that was only for his first two games. I do kinda miss the old site, loved getting my daily feed, though im sure this will grow on me, but I’m not the hugest fan of the colour scheme at the moment.
http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/jack-might-be-tiring-richmond-coach-20100808-11q63.html
“Richmond coach Damien Hardwick concedes a big AFL season might be catching up with key forward Jack Riewoldt.”
I wouldn’t be too keen on Jack at this stage. I’ve got him in another team and he’s been frustrating me a lot lately. Trading Bartel out is a luxury of the highest order. I’d be saving those trades for injuries. I’m never a fan of trading just for the sake of trading unless it’s Round 22.
Hi guys.
Loving the feedback re. the new site.
Joker – there are few aspects of the player search function that need to be played with to ensure correct data across the board. In the meantime, we encourage everyone to use afl.com.au as the definitive source.
We’re very pleased with the overall functionality of the player search though and believe it will be a very, very popular tool for DT coaches in 2011!!
Regarding the colour scheme: Our aim is to present something that is much more dynamic than the old site, whilst remaining AFL club neutral. Quite difficult! But regardless, we’re happy to tinker with this moving forward if necessary.
Thanks again, and PLEASE keep the feedback rolling in!!
Yeah joker I think were still ironing out a few bugs like the bower one. We wanted to test the site this year in time for next season. Glad u like the feature though! As for the color scheme, we played with it for ages, trying to get one that was not team-specific to any of the 16 afl clubs… Hopefully it will grow on you! :-)
Guys, I might be missing something (And if I am, feel free to slap me with the requisite amount of vigor) but the player averages seem to be askew!
Example: Dane Swan’s average is shown at 119.33, when it’s actually 124.
Boyd 111.00 vs 115.53
J. Selwood 97.67 vs 104.84…and so on.
No biggie, just thought I’d mention it, as it would seem to be a reasonably important indicator?
Thanks eebzzub – Averages were working fine on the test site, but are now off. We’ll have this fixed ASAP.
Cheers!
I like the look of the new site guys, very professional looking.
The Player search is fantastic. A drop-down selection box for the club, position or multi-position search would be handy. Especially the multi-position ….I wasn’t sure what to enter (I tried ‘forward’) until I got an error that said must be yes/no. Could be just user error though :P
Just to be different, i actually quite like the colour scheme. It’s a refreshing change than the black-on-white that most of the other DT sites are.
Also… anyone else wondering what to do if Sandilands isn’t named again?
Mitch Clark finally seems to be showing some form and has a reasonable run home.
Albeit a long shot, i’m actually quite liking McEvoy of late, too. Seems to be nudging Kosi aside as that 2nd Saints tall behind Roo and sneaking forward for a few goals. Probably way too risky to think about getting on him now but could be a good 2011 prospect.
Greg, when you want to search by position, select the ‘position’ tab, then as you begin to type, it should give a drop down menu to select any position. The ‘multi-position’ tab is a yes or no as it is simply asking whether you want to only be shown multi-position players. It may need a bit of getting used to (and a bit of tweaking on our behalf!), but as it stands i couldnt be happier with how the site looks! It’s been a long time coming for us and it’s not the only big change we have coming over the next 6 months hopefully!
Agree wholeheartedly Toby. My point wasn’t meant to be a criticism, sorry if it was taken that way :)
Reference the topic of the post….I can’t see myself going past Swan for the rest of the year.
Wilson, have a look at Jolly. Essendon and Hawthorn give up big points to ruckmen and Collingwood play both of those teams in the last three games. Jolly has a great run home for a ruckman and has shown some good form at stages this year.
Yeah i got that Greg, Sorry – i wasnt having a go. Definitely took it as constructive, which is exactly what we’re after at this stage!
And Wilson, I agree with Dan – Jolly is the best way to go. Clark has lacked much form this year and he did play WCE on the weekend who are another team to be pretty leaky towards ruckmen…
Im personally very nervous too with my season on the line..
I personally like the old Footy Tragic better. If it ain’t broke?
Reason being when surfing @ work, a white page with text looks a lot less suspect than a black one. Think of us IT slackers!
