Another Few To Ponder
Steve Johnson – Geelong (FWD, $381,400, Break even: 19, price drop this year: $55,500)
So Jared Brennan owners will be looking for a replacement (who, by the way, turned out to be teasing us once again!). Well, if you initially took the risk on the roller coaster ride of Brennan, you’re probably the sort of DT’er who wouldn’t have a huge beef with the similarly up and down Steve Johnson.
Stevie J has looked fantastic in his past two weeks. Granted, they were against the teams he scores first and third highest against. Also, they were both at Skilled Stadium, which is a ground he notoriously slays. However, he has been moving a lot more freely, which is the most important thing as far as I’m concerned.
His break even is only 19, so he’s definitely on the way up. Well, I say definitely, but it’s buyer beware with Stevie J, because when he stinks, he really bloody stinks. Last year he scored a 35 and a 62, plus three annoying scores in the 70s. Hopefully his sub 70 scores are out of the way, as he already has a 35 and a 69 this year.
One thing to note, however, is that he hasn’t scored a ton away from Skilled Stadium in 2010. In fact, all three games Geelong have played at Skilled have resulted in three tons and all four games away from Skilled have been less than a ton. While he’s a Skilled Stadium specialist, I wouldn’t expect his form to remain exclusive to that ground.
On the bubble
Matthew Jaensch – Adelaide (FWD, $77,800, Break even: -48)
First two games: 68 vs. Port Adelaide (L), 38 vs. Richmond (L…wait, I mean W…force of habit)
Jaensch came to Adelaide as a mature aged recruit from Sturt, as a reasonably accomplished SANFL player. He’s a fantastic kick of the ball and is best used across half forward, or maybe on the wing. But what we know about Neil Craig is that he loves playing players out of position (see: Walker, Taylor).
His 38 against Richmond was playing in a lock down role on Nason in the back pocket, which is pretty yuck for DT scoring. If Craig persists with him, he could be a good scorer, but with an injury list you would expect to one day get shorter his job security might not be great. I don’t think he’s a bad option if he can get another game this week, but if you’re desperate for a forward rookie I’d have to wonder why you didn’t jump on Fyfe or Grant last week – there’s not been a shortage of forward rookies lately.
Dylan Roberton – Fremantle (DEF, $89,500, Break even: -29)
First two games: 57 vs. West Coast (W), 39 vs. Brisbane (W)
First up, I’ve gotta be honest and say I haven’t seen Freo over the last two weeks, so I haven’t seen Roberton in action at AFL level yet, but he’s a very good kick of the ball coming out of the backline, so in time he could be one to keep an eye on.
For this year, he could also be not such a bad option. Nason, Silvagni, Hunt and Maguire are popular options who have either maxed out, or are close to doing so. The attractiveness with all of them (except maybe Silvagni when Grover comes back) is that they’ve got a pretty secure job, so provide great back up for your team. Roberton might not be there yet, but Harvey isn’t afraid to play the kids, which is a plus. He’s quite skinny though, so it’ll be tough to see him play out the season – just note that I said the same thing about Stephen Hill last year and was horribly wrong.
Lewis Stevenson – West Coast (MID, $94,500, Break even: -65)
First two games: 56 vs. Sydney (L), 79 vs. Hawthorn (W)
Another good kick of the pill is on the bubble this week. Stevenson had a pretty good debut against Sydney, but was dropped the next week unfortunately. After a week off he was back in and scored a 79, including eight marks and looked comfortable in the AFL.
I’m a little bit worried about the midfield downgrade options in the coming weeks, so if you need a bit of cash for a rookie who has maxed out, I don’t mind Stevenson. West Coast are pushing games onto their kids this year and hopefully Stevenson is a part of that. He’s been on their rookie list since 2008 and has improved fantastically, especially in the early parts of 2010.

what happened to Shuey?
He’s had a knee issue. Will be playing WAFL this weekend is what I’m hearing, so shouldn’t be too far away from returning to the Eagles.
Thank god, I’ve been nursing Shuey all this time on my bench – good to hear he’ll be back soon to make some more $$.
I took the Gamble on Brennan over Pavlich.. and look where it got me. I’m not taking another gamble on Super Johnson – I’m locking in Pav this time.
I think I’m with you Acidfiend – Pav was probably going to join my team this week anyway, but he’ll now come in for Brennan rather than upgrading a Rookie. I don’t have quite enough cash to upgrade Relton to Pav, Rockliff has more cash to earn, Gumby is also still going up and has great JS and jPod is out-performing my ‘premium’ forwards on a regular basis…
Interesting comments from Voss here. Brennan could be back in 3 now…

Thanks Wilson, that article has now left me confused, again! lol If I put Brennan on the pine with Relton, I’ve got to take a miss on Pav this week and watch him continue to increase in price… Decisions, decisions!!
@ Juzz
There is no way you should wait. Pav is an upgrade on Brennan. In fact, he’s probably an upgrade on most of the other guys you mentioned. Sure, someone like Gumbleton is still “going up,” but would good is that price rise if it doesn’t enable you to upgrade to a gun?
So downgrading hall probably to jaensch, thought I had to pick up hargrave last week and hall would have a good one against Melbourne… What are your thoughts on Palmer? I’d bring him in for Martin/jetta as my 6th mid til gablett becomes a more reasonable price or someone else hits a tempting price, this would also allow me to upgrade Duncan/gumby next week and pretty much have a settled team with 10 trades for injuries/finals with my weakest in each position being waters/Palmer/hille/pods who would be considered luxury trades
@eebzzub I know you’re right, unfortunately I let emotion interfere with my DT decisions and as a Bombers supporter, I’m very proud Gumby hasn’t broken himself (again) yet and feel bad trading him out!!
With Brennan injured, and Hall/Ziebell at peak prices it looks like some people will be upgrading this week to the likes of SJ/Didak.
IMO im finidng it difficult who to pick – SJ will almost certainly rise a bucketload this week, but i dont want to be sucked into his scores and be burnt later on in the season when his hip injury appears. As footytragic guys have said, he does start slow, but he underdone preseason worries me alot.
Similarly, with Didak there’s no doubt he is attracting the no.1 tag, and he has been able to deal with it so far this season but with freo this week, Crowley will goto Didak – with a tight tag (by one of the best), i’d like to see how he goes. With a fairly high B/E of 94, he will only rise a couple of k if he does well but drop alot of he does poorly. I might wait 1 week.
What are your opinions on the two? (i know you have written several articles on both of them this year lol)
Next couple of weeks should be interesting with ppl offloading cashcows and bringing in premiums!
With Hall/Ziebell, consider the fact the Bulldogs have a pretty soft run coming up and that Anthony’s injury might pave the way for Ziebell to get more midfield time…
Ziebell is avg less than 70% gametime and from what I’ve read this is because his engine isn’t big enough to play longer stints in the mid. I don’t think Anthony going down will greatly increase his gametime/scores but then again he could be used more. Hall has some pretty good defenders playing on him in the next month, presti, Fletcher and sydneys gamestyle doesn’t allow big scores.
Also on Hall, there is an article on the AFL website of Hall stating he is not 100% fit and will look to be rested in coming weeks… a worry. Also, his breakeven is 124ish, so there is no way he won’t drop a stack more this week, and as a player i was only going to use to upgrade from, it is time to go for me.
I am certain i will trade him to Pav, but i also have Brennan, so this is troubling me. With Rockliff currently on my bench, i am half tempted to bide my time with Brennan and think that 3-4 weeks could be ok to hold tight. But if Rockliff fails, i know i can immediately trade out Brennan.
I am also somewhat tempted by Stokes and wouldnt mind looking at one game by him before trading (although part of me just wants to be daring and do it now!). He has been in very good form in the VFL and with the absence of Corey, Rooke and the poor form of Byrnes, i think we could see some good scoring from Stokes. He is only cheap too ($322,000) which makes it more tempting.
Also, for those contemplating Waters’ spot in their team, consider Jordan Russel. You will need $60k to upgrade to him, but his recent form has been terrific. He seems to be the nominated rebounder for Carlton as we saw against the Saints on Monday. And also, against the Cats a few weeks prior, he proved he wasnt even scared to run off a player like Stevie J.
Personally, i am thinking of keeping Waters for another week or two with my eyes on Sam Fisher and Jed Adcock as possibles… however i feel like the reason my team is currently struggling is because i have jumped on too many “bottomed out” players this season – perhaps i have to start remembering why they bottomed out in the first place…
Pavlich in for Brennan is the only trade im going make this week. Unless someone recommends pulling a downgrade on Naston or Macguire this week with an eye for an backline upgrade next week.
The only option who’s going to make immediate cash is Robertson, but Webberley will probably be the option next week. Who’s more attractive of the two of them?
Do you have Rockliff, Hughie? As i don’t mind Toby’s idea here to sit Brennan on the bench and have Rocky covering him, meaning you can look at other trade options for this week or next.
