Ok, I’ll go first…
Some players here I am still not sold on and will need to keep an eye on through pre-season. Also not sure about my midfield structure – kinda want another premium, but would likely have to be at the expense of Lenny. Starting with no Swan is dangerous, but I am banking on bringing him in pretty early. Rookies probably need some work – need a better spread of DPP links (still working out how best to use this rule), but happy enough for now.

Hey Neenie, I like it. Some good rookies there too. MAYBE a little too rookie heavy in the forward line… Personally I’d upgrade one of those to a premium with your leftover cash. Lewis is tempting with DPP link, but he was pretty inconsistent (DT-wise) in that role last year. Would you consider Sidebottom instead perhaps??
Also James McDonald will be a really intriguing one… We know he will score well when he plays… But how many games will he get? 10? 15? That’s the only thing that concerns me, especially now we are back to 2 rookies per position. I could be proven way wrong (not that I’m saying it’s a bad choice), but he’s one I’d be a tad nervous about.
I also like your four premium midfield. Could work well this year with a few less clear-cut rookie options. Another thought could be putting a DPP premium in there instead… Could work well as a swing man… Just an idea I have toyed with myself
This is my rough team for now. Risky i know but think there is too much rookie value in midfield to pass up on. Also Giles as 2nd ruck will depend on how he goes in Round 1 vs Sydney (planning on using partial lockout loophole, anything over 75 will lock him in)
TEAM NAME: Big Test Icicles

FWD: L. Franklin, D. Martin, D. Zaharakis, R. Gray, N. Riewoldt, J. Brown, J. Porplyzia (A. Saad, D. Zorko)
CASH LEFT: $76,000
Thunda, interesting ploy for Giles. Don’t mind it though… Clever.
Few risky picks in there… Shaw, Gilbert, Grimes, Gray, Porps… Although all have their own upsides.
I reckon Morabito needs to be monitored closely… See how he goes in the NAB cup as I have a feeling he is still not in full training at Freo.
Saad is another to monitor. Obviously training well, but only got 15+ disposals once last year for the Bullants. So may not be as friendly for DT as some may think.
Salary cap left: $24,100.

Yea have heard Morabito isnt full training yet so will def keep close eye on him. Interesting stat on Saad, might have to track his preseaon form bit closer. But struggling to find decent forward rookies, hence stacking with proven players.
Hi everyone, first post on here. What do you think?
DEF: B. Goddard, H. Shaw, B. Deledio, G. Birchall, G. Broughton, B. Ellis, W. Sierakowski (B. Smedts, B. Wilkes)
MID: D. Swan, G. Ablett jnr, J. Selwood, D. Pfeiffer, D. Shiel, K. Stevens (L. Brown, T. Mitchell)

FWD: L. Franklin, M. Pavlich, D. Zaharakis, D. Martin, A. Didak, A. Saad, A. Treloar (T. Walsh, D. Zorko)
CASH LEFT: $74,000
I’ve shoved Luke Brown in the mids for D/M mpp, but he’ll only be there if he plays.
Here’s the most recent incarnation of my team for 2012:
DEF: B Goddard, H Shaw, B Deledio, J Adcock, M Clarke, T Mohr, S Morris / L Brown, B Wilkes
MID: GAJ, T Rockliff, M Murphy, J Selwood, C Wingard, K Stevens / D Shiel, T Mitchell
RUC: D Cox, A Sandilands / J Giles, O Stephensen
FWD: S Johnson, L Franklin, M Pavlich, M Robinson, D Zorko, A Treloar, B Smedts / S Rowe, S Kerridge
$70k remaining.
All premiums are pretty much set with a few of the cashcows placeholders until I know which rookie listed players get elevated (L Spurr, K Horsely, D Pfieffer, M Baguley). Team is structured to not get too smashed by the byes.
Am considering the single premium ruck strategy too. Would allow me to upgrade a FWD rook to a premium.
@ stkildathunda.
Do you know how Fyfe is tracking? I read that he is yet to rejoin the main training group and may not do so for a while?!?!
@ Vince.
Nice team. Brave of you to pick Dids this season, hopefully he gets back to his 2010 form. FYI – I’ve been keeping an eye on Pfeiffer too. He’s a rookie so hopefully Port have a vacancy for him on the senior list.
On L Brown as a DPP. I think that the rule revision this year means that it isn’t necessary to have an ‘active’ DPP link (e.g. L Brown in MID). Perhaps move L Brown to the DEF line (?for Sierakowski or Wilkes?) and replace him with a pure MID rook?
Fyfe hasn’t had a full pre-season. He had shoulder and groin ops and is a bit behind the 8 ball. He’s a gun, but the amount of mid/fwd options that spend most of their time in the midfield (Zakka, Martin, Robbo) will make Fyfe less popular, especially with his setbacks.
I think it’ll be just as important to have active DPP links this year. The rule is handy, but you can shuffle players around, as necessary without using a trade if you have an active link.
@footballer
Nice team overall, but one too many mid-priced players in the forward line for my liking.
@mezzoculo
Good team, but I wouldn’t be going anywhere near Adcock. Had a good year last year, and has shown he is a premium when fit. I just don’t think he will be fit all year. Like the Stevie J pick, haven’t seen him in too many teams but I seriously think his average could rise.
Apparently Pfeiffer played pretty well in SANFL last year, and it’d be fair to say Port were terrible last year, surely he’d be in their best 22…
Hey guys thanks for the write ups so far – have been very helpful. Some good teams above too. Here is my first crack at my DT next year:
DEF: Goddard, Deledio, Broughton, Heppell, Clarke M, Ellis B, Mohr T (Spurr L, Wilkes)
MIDS: Ablett, Rockliff, Selwood, Murphy, Clifton, Shiel (Mitchell T, Stevens K)
RUCK: Sandilands, McEvoy (Giles, Stephensen)
FWDS: Franklin, Fyfe, Zaharakis, Martin, Christensen, Walsh T, Smedts B (Zorko D, Treloar A)
$46,600 left. Hoping Broughton plays through the midfield. I think Heppell will step up next year. Hoping to upgrade to Swan/Pendles after their bye. Have gone Sandi over Leuenberger at this stage, Fyfe over Robinson (if he’s fit) and Christensen over Brown and Didak. Draft 1 of 100… Cheers
Wow – all solid teams there for this stage of the season!! I havent put a draft team on paper yet.
I noticed that most people look like they’re passing on Hayes and Barlow so far?? (other than Toby, who is perhaps a little biased when it comes to Lenny).
Was interested in thoughts on this? I thought one of the two above would make most teams?
@Toby
Thanks for the feedback, hadn’t considered Sidebottom at all. Will be something to look at. Think I agree with the rookie laden fwd line. Might use the extra cash to upgrade. Also if McDonald plays the first 5-10 games and goes well, will be good money made to upgrade to a premo considering he’s rookie priced.
@LeatherHed
Didn’t consider Barlow at all, but am now hearing he’s flying on the track (as is everyone if you read the reports). Will monitor him and Lenny in the NAB and then make a decision.

I will be pinning my hopes on unique players such as Duffield, M.Murphy, Stanton, Nicnat, Z.Smith, Chappy and Pavlich. These seven players are in very few teams, that i have seen, especially together.
My defence is weak, but apart from probably needing one more premium forward, i will be able to focus on sorting the chaff from the hay in the first 6 or so rounds in search of the better performing defenders.
Of course this team and most others will be changed more often than our underwear.
Dulcify, I still wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat screaming, “GET THE BALL DUFFY, YOU USELESS…oh, it was just a dream.” He destroyed my team last year.
@ Dan.
I agree that DPP will be important in 2012. The reduction in the number of byes and their agrregation across a single, three week bloc just means it won’t be as critical to success as it was last season. IMO, DPP will be most effective in combating the late season resting strategy that seems to be popular in clubland.
As such, it may be possible to net more early season points by selecting rookies according to scoring capacity and game time. Doing this would mean your centreline rooks would, on the balance of things, be MID only while your back and forward line will include a number of DT-friendly, non-key position DPP rookies. You could then ‘activate’ DPP links in time for the second half of 2012 by trading in on-the-bubble rookies using the new DPP rule mechanism.
Using L Brown as an example (can be any other potentially low scoring DPP rookie who earns a gig in the centreline due solely to his DPP status). Assigning him to your last DEF bench position allows you to fill the MID vacancy with a more DT-friendly player who can be traded out once he hits his price ceiling (hopefully prior to the byes). You can then Swap Brown across to the centreline and bring in a likely DEF rookie with a couple of games under his belt. DPP is now active and ready for those unwanted late season rests.
Obviously, this all relies upon your initial rookie selection. Nailing this means you shouldn’t need to use DPP early in the year, well unless an unfortunate number of your premiums get struck down by injuries (touch wood). If that happens (as it has to me)… well, then its time to start planning for 2013.
Anyhoo, that’s my 2 cents and my lunch break!
@ Dan
I fully understand your feelings in regards to Duffman. This is the first time i have actually chosen him, part gut instinct and the fact that most punters will be choosing Broughton. If he succeeds, i am a genius, if he fails, it’s back to the drawing board.

I have a great feeling about locking and loading my forward line this year, which justifies my sub-standard backs and high risk second ruck. Mids fairly par I think, feel Barlow is a relatively low risk.
@ mezz
agree with you on the importance of DPP this year – with all my coin in the forward line I’ve linked it too the mids via rookie Zorko just in case. Then should be trade time once the byes hit when we’ll know where to focus. Some DPP’s on the bubble around that time would be nice/miracle…

D’oh, I was attempting to argue AGAINST starting with DPP rooks in the midfield :)
Interesting backline aside, I see you’ve got a couple of rookie-listed players in your team (Spurr, Horsely) that I’m interested in. Any idea whether their clubs have space on the senior list for them?
It would probaably be handy to have a list of senior list vacancies by club [Hint, hint Toby, Dan or Kristian ;)].
Please give me some advice as I live in LA and dont speak to a lot of AFL pros here!!!

@mezz
Sorry, not written so clearly – I also agree under normal circumstances on your MID only stance – however more stating that I felt I’ve gone for a unique forward line, which in this case made one DPP link worthwhile…
Unfortunately I am in the dark as far as further info on these rooks go. I think I’ve learnt to try and ignore pre season cup form for premiums and even mid pricers but make my rook decisions based on this form. So at this stage, no rook is a lock.
That’s a pity, bob.
Also, are you aware that five of your seven starting FWDs plus two starting MIDs share the 12 bye? That could get messy.
I am aware, but have decided to pick players on merit rather then round. I really don’t think one poor round will decide the season. Though 3 guaranteed donuts is fairly rich I admit. Genius or pure ludicrous, probably the latter.
Who dares wins, bob :)

Need to ask a silly question or two…
1) Where are you guys getting the accurate 2012 DT and SC prices…?
2) Is there a site / app etc where you can enter ‘test’ teams based on 2012 prices??
Cheers
I’ll try and have a crack at a few of these teams during the day. It would be great to see some more posters giving feedback for other teams too. I kinda feel like a preachy douche going through everyone’s teams when I know we’ve got plenty of astute readers!
Alexander, the first thing that strikes me is a speculative backline and a heap of cash in the bank. It tapers off pretty quickly after your top three defenders and while there is upside with Suban and Lake they both carry risks. Even if you keep those two as your fifth and sixth defenders and upgrade a rookie with all that extra cash I think it’ll help.
Structurally the rest seems pretty good to me, though of your four forward rookies Treloar is the only one I’m a fan of. Good first draft.
cmdevling, it’s linked at the very top of this article. The prices are out via DT Pro and SC Gold, and Fan Footy has updated their database accordingly. These aren’t 100% official, but any changes from here would be very minor (and not positional – positions are locked in).
Thanks Dan, long time reader, first time poster, thanks for the info, and cheers for the info. Looking forward to a big year (top 1000 in 2010 and 2011)
Chris
Ok, had a play round with a team today, and here is the result.
My concern is that I have a lot of players returning from injury. Previously I have relied on a GnR strategy, and it has done me well, am I missing out on value in the rookie dept by picking the likes of Lake, Barlow, Dempsey, Winderlich, and Morabito…?

@ cmdevling
my take on the mid price v rookie debate is; take a mid pricer if you think they are a potential/likely keeper, then you save money and a trade ( barlow yes, lake risky but maybe worth the gamble – plus big gambles are half the fun – also half the frustration…! ) If they’re not going to be a keeper then more money to be made with a rookie IMO. Winderlich and Dempsey I’m not confident in, therefor rookie for mine. Morabito is another kettle of fish as he’s almost rookie price, I’d make him a lock IF he were at full training…. my thinking this year is to steer clear of anyone not getting a good pre season under the belt, I seemed to get burnt badly by these type players last year! ( Fyfe this year..? ) Let me know if you know of any others at this stage.
Thanks for the feedback Fossil.
I agree with your logic re: the injury returnees. My gut says to steer clear of Lake as well, but at that price its hard to, and when I see him popping up in so many teams I figure I must be crazy not to have him haha
I am Def staying away from Fyfe this year, and a few others too. I had him and enjoyed it last year, but he had so many near misses with injury he is surely due this time round! Plus to justify the pick this year he is competing against a whole other level of guys compared to last year, when he started out as a mid pricer, who then became a keeper.
What I am keen to identify this year, is who will be our Fyfe’s, Shiels’ and Ward’s of 2012?? Those $250 – $350 players who have breakout years and end as unique keepers. Getting those guys locked in early is key!
@cmdevling
I’m trying to limit the number of players who haven’t even had a full preseason (only M Murphy and B Goddard in my current 22). However, I’m happy to look at fallen premiums who’s price drop is due to an injury which they have now recovered from (think J Brown and M Barlow). Personally, injured midpricers like Winderlich, Morabito and Dempsey are off my radar as I see either too much risk or not enough reward. Lake kinda falls in between these two catagories (mainly because he’s soooo cheap) – he has a history of punching out massive scores yet does not seem to be fully over the injuries that he sustained in the first half of 2011. IMO he could be worth a punt if you’re up for the risk.
Thanks Mezz, whats the word on Morabito, I thought he was back and fighting fit – not so?
Devo.

@Dappavito, not a bad side, but worried about ur Fwd’s pretty weak. And you would want Reiwoldt and Zaka to have markedly improved years to end as keepers. I like the Swallow, and McCarthy selections, I think McCarthy was always opportunity starved at collingwood and should get regular games at Port according to an inside source.
@Tseagrim – Super ‘unique’ side mate, maybe too ‘unique’ – there is something to be said for the tried and true stars!! You are relying on all of Sidebottom, Zaka, Martin, Brown and Sandi to have better seasons than last year… too risky?
I like the Swallow, Adcock and Waters selections, though with the last two, you know they are never going to play 22 games.
@TexasHawk – As a bombers man, I toyed with the heppell selection, but couldn’t do it. I hope he does justify his price, but think he may drop a bit initially for a mid season pick up? Your team is pretty balanced, though you have a lot of ‘ageing stars’ with Brown, Riewoldt, Chappy, Power, Didak, Lake and Hayes, coupled with Barlow and winderlick returning from injury… is this too much of a high risk strategy?? Risk vs reward I guess? Overall I like you team most of the three posted most recently!!
What does everyone think of the Bye rounds?? I saw someone recently make comment about ‘trying to limit damage in the multi bye rounds’. At first I assumed this mean spreading evenly the amount of players who have byes in rounds 11-13.
But then I got to thinking, would it not be better to load up on one or two of the bye round group teams, effectively giving away a loss that week, but ensuring you have a stroger team in the other two multi bye rounds???
My thinking is that, if you spead your 30 man squad evenly across the groupings, you will have 10 players out each week, leaving a minimum of 2 donuts and severely weakening your team. There is every chance you could come up a stronger team in each and every week of the MultiBye and lose all three rounds.
If alternately you loaded up on teams having the bye in say round 12, you are strong for rounds 11 and 13, hopefulling winning those games, while presumably losing in round 12…
2 outta 3 ain’t bad, as they say in the classics!
What does everyone think?
@devo
cheers for the feedback. dont think its too risky at all saying brown and sandi will have better season, and probably not sidebottom either. zaha i can see enjoying shelter he will get from having bigger bodies like jobe when he’s fit, although martin is a bit risky, i can see one of him and cotchin taking off this year, but not sure who. im banking on the fact that cotchin is smaller so might not be able to handle the physical contact of a tag as well.
adcock is now sam fisher though, thinking with wilkes drafted its obvious they want a fullback so fisher can roam up the ground as he does so well.
looked at your team to put my two cents in, and saw some nice selections. clarke could prove to be awesome, although i cant see dempsey or winderlich reeeeally doing too much more than a rookie might at this stage. LTI’s take about half a season to get back to peak fitness from my experiences. i like the selection of goodes too. tried and tested, will deliver most times. i only dont have him because i had him last year and got sick of him having massive quarters, only to completely go missing in others. frustrating. but hey, thats the fun in DT
@ Devo
Your strategy for the bye rounds is good for anyone who is chasing private league victory. The added bonus with these byes is also that if you have a good start to the season, then you could throw a game or two over the bye rounds and save the trades, where others in your league may need to trade through these rounds.
For those gunning for overall ranking, the strategy changes though. In this case you would need to minimise as much as possible the points lost over the byes, and so team structure becomes very important.
Here’s my second draft guys. Realised I have no DPP links in my miss, but this will likely change once NAB gets underway.

@Neenie21 Tony Armstrong should be avoided at all costs! He reminds me way too much of Richard Tambling – i.e. doesn;t get enough pill, is weak in the contest and turns it over when he does get it. Even for $290k, stay clear!
Guys, any thoughts on Andrew Gaff. I noticed hardly anyone has him in their draft squads. He could be the Nat Fyfe/Ward equivalent this year??
Interesting thought on Gaff Superwolf. He did get a few 100pt games last year, my only concern would be West Coast dropping away this year, and his size and ability for his body to stand up to a whole year of footy, hoping he has bulked up!!
@Neenie, Good team, love the mids, if only mine could look so strong for round 1!! I feel you may have sacrificed too much in the backline though, it looks decidely weak.
Also, have you read Dan’s artcile about Saad, may be one to avoid…
@superwolf – just figured Tomy Armstrong could become a regular player with the Swans this year, but I’ll definitely be watching NAB to see what his workrate and positioning is. No rookie is safe in my team until I see what bobs up in NAB cup.
@Devo – read the article on Saad but as with any rookie, his position always depends on NAB form. If he’s no good it’d probably be changed to a GWS player. I also didn’t mind being quite rookie heavy in my backline as it seems every year there’s different premiums that turn up. Theres only a few real premiums every year and I’m happy to wait until they show themselves. Hopefully the points I miss in the meantime while my rookies and mooing and making me cash in the backline, my premiums in the mids will be making up for it.
Hope this makes sense!?!
Cheers for the feedback
@Devo
Firstly thanks for your thoughts on the team, I too realise the fwd line is rather weak, and no doubt there will be some wholesale changes made there before too long.
I have tried to work out also which way is best to handle the bye weeks, atm i have 10, 10, 10. I have been thinking about this problem for a while and what i have come up with is this: If you load up on rd13 bye players especially for your rookies or even mid pricers, make as few trades as possible(injuries only or donut avoidance)in the first 10 rds, then you should be able to start cashing in on some of your rooks to help cover the personnel losses in rd 11 and 12. Come rd13 you no longer have a plethora of players with this as their bye week. I might attempt to put together a team using this strategy and you guys tell me what you think.
@ Neenie
What you’ve done with your backs may not be a bad idea this year!! When you think back to last season the gap between the premiums and the rest was pretty significant with the backs, and apart from the obvious Goddard / Deledio types the others were a bit of a lottery. Names like Duffield and Broughton (to a lesser extent) spring to mind. It means you will need to nail those rookie / mid priced selections though.
@ Superwolf
Im not sold on Armstrong, but Im definitely considering him myself. If you take out his final sub-affected game out last year he averaged 85 from 4 games. And Sydney have had reasonable results from recycled players in the past. NAB will make it clearer, but hopefully he’s given the Malceski-type rebound role.
@neenie21 – I could be wrong re: Tony Armstrong but I think with Malceski coming back Armstrong will struggle to hold down that half back/wing spot. Take a look at guys like Suban and Phil Davis as possible replacements for Armstrong at much the same cost.
@ Devo – fair comments on Gaff but I truly believe this guy is a gun and will be elite midfield in a few years so I’d rather take a punt on him on every year for the next few years. I expect steady increases if not a breakout year very soon. Take out his games where he was subbed and he would have a lot higher average and subsequently a lot higher price this year. And I’m also not convinced the Eagles will drop away. Maybe down to top 6 or 7 but nothing drastic to effect fantasy scoring.
Just a rushed one but i’m sure you will get the picture….

Let me know what you think guys
@ Dappavito
By my calcs, the best structure in order to avoid donuts is 8/8/14 symbolising the players having byes for the rounds R11/R12/R13.
At the start of R11, you have your entire bench playing, and the 8 players that have the bye miss. Then come the end of R11, you make 3x trades/upgrades to players that have a R13 bye (which means your team is still structured for 8 players with byes in R12, BUT…. now you have 11 players with byes in R13).
Then for R12 you bench the 8 players you have with byes in that round, and the 8 that have already had their bye in R11 replace them.
At the conclusion of R12, you then make 3 more trades (again to your R13 squad), bringing the total number of players that now have a bye for R13 down from 11 to 8.
Then in R13 your entire bench plays in R13, and zero donuts??? Unless I have miscalculated something??
The catch is that this will only work assuming ALL positions in your entire team (including both reserves for each position) are playing.
And hopefully I have it right from memory that we can make 3 trades at the end of R12 and R13 too… :S
This is either pure LeatherHed magic, or I’ve massively overlooked something??
** sorry correction: And hopefully I have it right from memory that we can make 3 trades at the end of R11 and R12
lol first comment,
I’m not sure LeatherHed. It sounds good but if you drew it up I think there’d still be a zero or two. If you bring rucks into the equation it could work.
EG, take this team (not sure if it fits under the cap or not)
B: Scotland, Goddard, Adcock, Grimes, Docherty, Ellis, Spurr (Morris, Wilkes) – BYES: 2/2/5
M: Murphy, Selwood, Rockliff, Coniglio, Horsley, Mitchell (Pfieffer, Hill) – 2/2/4
R: Sandilands, Lycett (Giles, Stephenson) – 2/2/0
F: Chapman, Franklin, Martin, Zaharakis, Zorko, Rowe, Milera (Treloar, Saad) – 2/2/5
So, you’re set for Round 11, take your 8 bye players off and put others on. After the round finishes you trade out 3 players who have the Round 13 bye (EG, Morris, Wilkes and Hill) for 3 players who have the Round 11 bye. The structure then becomes 11/8/11. However, come Round 13 you will still need to trade out Ellis, Saad, Milera and Rowe to ensure no zeros. In this instance you take Rowe and swap him with Lycett, and trade out Saad, Ellis and Milera for R11/R12 bye players. If it all went perfectly it might work out….. But who wants to put all that effort in for (probably) a 10% chance that all these players play.
I reckon it’s best off planning the team that bests suit you while being wary of the byes and not overloading in one position.
Your math is correct leatherhead… though for that to work its counting on no injuries, suspensions or omissinos from your 30 man squad for 3 weeks straight… a big ask… it may also push you into taking premiums and getting rid of others for the sake of a single round… I think you have to look at the bigger picture… and of course also depends if you are going for overall finish, or league win!

@ LeatherHed – I feel your pain, i can’t believe i am stressing out about something that is about 4 months away, yes the dreaded byes.
I am currently considering a 9/9/12 formation (barring injuries, suspension etc).
Providing all players are named from my squad i would be willing to take on round 11 with 21 players. Round 12 presents a similar scenario, again, hopefully i will still have 21 players available. This means, 2 bye rounds finished, hopefully not too many points lost by playing one short each round. Round 13 is now upon us, i then use 3 trades using round 13 players only (again hoping for no injuries), this gives me a squad of 21 also for round 13. Once again, hopefully not too much damage done, that means 3 DONUTS over 3 rounds, but the better news is, i have only used 3 TRADES in those 3 rounds and hopefully i have managed to win one, two, or all of my league matches. Not very likely, but possible. Good luck.
Any thoughts of improving my supercoach team?

Sorry guys, i should have stated that my 9/9/12 formation is for the end of round 10, not my starting line up. I also don’t mind eating 3 donuts over 3 rounds, especially if i only have to use 3 trades, i’m sure some people will use their full quota of trades in this period and they may regret it near seasons end, cheers.
@ Woodman – You only have 8 defenders. Apart from that, i like your team. Personally i would swap Fyfe for another premium, i believe he is not having much of a pre-season, operations have set him back a little and i’m not confident that he can/will produce his scores from last season, which by the way were great. He is a very talented player none the less. Good luck.

@letherhed, dulcify, devo
This theory does rely on a lot of luck with ommissions, injuries etc. but hey its fun to theorise. The ruck setup 2/2/0 is definately the best way to go using this theory.
Guys, take a look at this article on fanfooty.com.au on a recommended bye strategy. Worth a read.

@ Woodman – There are several players you could swap for Fyfe.
Goodes, Chapman, Pavlich, Dusty Martin, Stevie J. The first four named are all DPP, so you will still have the benefit of switching players around. There are also some slightly cheaper alternatives such as Robinson, Zaharakis, Rioli and even Jonno Brown.
As for Fyfe, he still may line up in round 1, so the choice is yours, good luck.
Did you find your missing defender?
Yes Dulcify S.Frost was my missing defender. I decided to go with Goodes to replace Fyfe although am worried about his age. I swapped a few rookies around. J. Tynan replaced by S.Morris in the backline and A.Trelour replaced by A.Saad in the forward line. Other than that the side is the same.
@ Woodman – Dan has done a great write up in regards to A. Saad.
Adam is a Goodes player, i’m afraid that all the tried and true forwards that we have relied upon for the past several years are all getting on in age and this may be the last year we get to use the likes of Goodes, O’Keefe, Chappy, NRoo, Browny, Boomer, and Pavlich, just to name a few.

Hi guys, I dont know if I’m missing anything in the mids.. but I have put more emphasis on fwd’s and backs DPP. I have faith in West on his form at the end of last year, but will probably be looking to upgrade him to Cox mid year.
Hi lads, how are we!?
Thought I’d drag myself out of dormancy and get started on my 2012 DT campaign preparation like many others!
Easing myself into this year after a big few months off-the track personally.
(got married, another cats flag, travelled hard, partied hard.. for those interested, hehe!)
Anyhoo! .. I’m really digging some of these early draft teams and the bounds of preseson/player info provided by the FT boys, per usual.
I haven’t really played too much with a format for my team yet but I’ve had a few blokes “locked” in mind since 2011 that I’m starting to second-guess now. (was always going to happen)
One point of observation in the teams above is the lack of one of my favourite Dream Teamers, in one Matthee Boyd.
Not one selection in the above teams I’ve noticed, which to me is intriguing.
Unless I’m missing something, the guy is a jet and has been for a number of years.
I imagine some people are just starting to get a bit age-weary of him perhaps, seeing as though there is a new, younger generation of DT premium to select from in the likes of Murphy, Rockliff, etc.
Oh well, just something I noticed, I know I will likely pick him coz I love the guy. Unless somehow convinced otherwise..
But I look forward to getting back amongst it all again and sparring off with the usual crowd.
Happy new year and bring on 2012!
Long time reader but first post. I work at Champion Data and thought I would let you blokes know that the 2012 edition of AFL Prospectus has arrived. Just started to read it but it looks better than ever.
This isn’t a shameless plug – I just wanted you to know that if you are in the city and want to save on postage costs (as well as not having to wait for it to hit the shops), then you are welcome to come on down to the office and pick one up for $39.99. We’re at 51 City Road, Southbank. Its Suite One which is just inside the front door to your left. The office is directly opposite the HWT/IBM tower on City Road. If you’re coming from Flinders St station then you exit at the Elisabeth St end but on the river side; cross the footbridge then keep going past the Langham Hotel until you hit City Road then cross the pedestrian crossing (take care) and you’re at the front door.
I can’t post my early team at this time as our Champion Data leagues are highly competitive and, as I expect I’m not the only employee who spends too much time on the site, I’ll be giving away too much (they all know who Two Towers is unfortunately).
Oops that should be $39.95. We’ve got a big jar of 5 cent pieces ready.
hey all
ive been planning my 2012 team from about december last year and i have pretty much locked down a team but with a few questions. First is my fifth premium midfield player first option is either barlow or hayes but im also tossing up picking d.swallow and t.scully. My reasons being is that swallow averaged 80sc points all year and is a great talent but could he be a player like Fyfe and come out with a great 2nd year and average 105sc points its a gamble but is a steal at his price and my other option is t.scully is almost the same price as the other 3 but is a young leader in a young team an is interesting to see if he leads the stats across the board all year for GWS scully could be a gamble but i am still tossing up between barlow and hayes or play the wild card with david swallow.
Finally my last problem is my 2nd pick ruckman i already have a premium and 2 rookies that should get plenty of game time but cant quite manage to add a player to that position and stick with him any options will be well noted and very helpful.
hahaha Two Towers…. This is not a shameless plug…. but…. INSERT HUGE WAFFLING SHAMEFUL PLUG!!!
At least you know your audience mate, I hope you win the sales bonus this month!
To be completely honest, I purchased a copy last year, and found the info not all that relevant, it helped narrow down some choices, but the amount of info available online now is far greater, and most importantly it is up to date.
I really think there would be more value in having a $39.99 year long membership and you Champion Data sending the freako email only to those subscribers, and perhaps adding some juicy exclusive tidbits along the way, trade rumours, injury news etc etc…
Just Sayin…
Disagree with that. If you read the Prospectus from cover to cover there is some gold in there and the stats – particularly for players just coming into the system is amazing. Old copies are also great reference points to try and predict break out players to see if they’ve got a history in juniors of winning the ball. Thanks for the post Two Towers. I tried to get out of work early enough to swing by and grab one tonight, but just fell short.

That’s the most unique team structure I’ve seen so far on Footy Tragic!
You’ve got a couple of rookie listed players (e.g. Spurr, Bell), so be sure they get promoted before round 1 lock out.
Brave decision to have so many injury prone premiums (Grimes, Otten, Hayes and Didak) – will work well for you if they stay on the park.
Seems the team is well structured for the byes. Although three of your FWD keepers share the Rnd 13 bye (Franklin, Martin and Walker), you’ve got it set-up so that Dusty can move into the MID line to prevent a donut. Nice!
You got much cash left?
What are people’s thoughts of starting with five premium midfielders?
I understand that rookies in the mids score more, and that this means you could only have 3 or 4 premiums in the defence and up forward BUT I’m more sure on which midfielders will probably do well as I am with forwards/defenders.
Hi guys, have made a few changes to my original team. Still not sure about porplyzia and lake, though if heard porplyzia has been training well. As with most people, will have to waut till the nab cup to make any final changes. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I can understand your thinking behind the 5 premium mids, but think its a bit risky given the lack of depth in the fwd and defence this year compared with the rookie mids (shiel, clifton, stevens, mcdonald, mitchell, horsely, zorko etc). Also only having two on the bench this year makes it more important to get your rookie selections right
Lack of depth in the fwd and defence rookies that is

Chadwick, I think there’s a bit of merit in starting 5 premium mids. It’s something I’ll be toying with. It’s high risk/high reward, because you’re right that there are more rookie options in the mids, but the premium mids score more than backs and forwards so. You really have to nail your back and forward rookies if you go with five gun mids and at this early stage I think it’s too risky this year because it looks like a weak rookie group outside of the midfield. We’ll see how it’s looking once the NAB Cup starts though…

Colesy, I gotta say, there is significant injury risk on every line with your team. Very interesting to see you go so budget in the midfield, but I don’t mind it. I’m just a bit worried you overpaid for some of your rookies. Coniglio, Tyson and Wingard are all good options, but IMO that’s a lot of money to spend on three players who have never played a game. Someone like Koby Stevens, James McDonald, Stevie Clifton (I see he’s in your forwards, but I’ll explain later) could free up some cash to shore up some of your risks elsewhere.
In your forwards I imagine you’re hoping six of them are keepers for the year, so it’s nice to not have to worry about them, but Riewoldt’s knee and Brown carry risks. I’m not going near Roo this year, but I can see the reasoning. I’ll consider Brown. Having Porplyzia back them up is asking for trouble though. Similarly in your back line you’ve got Grimes and Lake coming off bad years injury wise and I don’t have the same trust in Scotland this year at his age.
Overall I like your idea of going for a budget midfield, but I think you need to look at shuffling a couple of names around to thin out your injury risks.
On Stevie Clifton, Fan Footy have him down as MID/FWD, but that’s an error. He’s actually MID only.
1st try this season(probably change a bit by round 1)

my team mark II
Hargrave i think potential smokie. averaged very healthily a few seasons ago before injury struck. Priddis in as a unique mid that scores consistently (never under 80 last year). worried about zaha in forwards though… thinking beams/sidebottom may be a safer bet.
thoughts would be appreciated, more than happy to share my views about your team in return
xoxo dreamteam dude
@ Power2Win – Love th midfield, however I worry that your spending there may have sacraficed quality elsewhere a little too much?? You have a huge list of players coming off bad injury seasons, or just plain bad seasons, big risk?? I am talking of Brown, Didak, Reiwoldt, HMac, Montagna, Drummond, Lake, Hargrave, Grimes and Sandilands. That spells trouble for mine, but I guess if they all return to their potential scores this year, you will come out well ahead! I usually try and limit myself to 2-4 of these players maxuimum, as they don;t always seem to come off!
@tomosyeartoshine – Like your team mate, some good picks there. I have the same ruck combo at the moment. Tho will want some solid pre-season form from HMac to warrant selection as #2 ruck! I also like the Robinson, Zaka and Martin picks up fwd, there are a number of fwd/mids around that price who are tempting this year. Can I ask why u took robinson over say sidebottom who seems heavily favored this year by coaches??? Just interested in ur logic, not saying its a good or bad choice!
@tseagrim – I like your defence mate, though I haven’t heard any news on hargrave, would love to know if you have any inside goss? Could be a better pick than Lake! Love priddis, such an accumulator, I haven’t found a spot for him in my team, but thats mainly due to his bye in r11 to be honest! J brown should also provide good value. Yours is one of the more balanced teams I am have seen so far, wuite like it. Only real risk is Hargrave, Brown and Sandi – I am still worried about him and staying away!)
Cheers – Devo
Thanks devo..i tend to agree at this stage and will be culling a few of these guys out before season proper..very doubtful they will all get back to there best..the 1 that really interests me Daniel Connors,,was flying two seasons back but offield is him problem i think so hoping Hardwick has got in his ear and reminded him how quick it can be over,,remember Sampi anyone
Could someone please tell me how much money Thompson (adel), Watson (ess), Prismall (ess), Howlett (ess), Sandilands (frem), Pavlich (frem), Thomas (coll) and Cameron (gws) are.

I have a bit of work to do on my backline and maybe my midfield, but I think I’m set in my forward and ruck.
Opinions on the team would be great!
Interesting you have chosen M. Baguley, not the usual rookie pick for coaches but could be a unique pick. He is like Hibberd a running half back who can also play forward. Hopefully he gets early games for you, what made you choose him??
Hi guys
Decided to look at a different setup this year, After having a successful year and winning all my leagues , I’m not to concerned about the byes as i’ll back my team to win every other week.
Let me know what you think on a rough draft:
Def:Goddard,Scotland,Delideo,Conca,Lake,Talia,M.Clarke
L.Brown,B.Wilkes
Mid:Ablett,Pendlebury,Selwood,Murphy,Barlow,Sheil
C.Smith,T,Mitchell
Rucks:Mcevoy, Giles
Orren,J.Witts
Fwd: Franklin,N.Reiwoldt,Sidebottom,Martin,Zorko,Smidts,Treloar,Newton,Croizer
I know my fwd is bit light , I have always gone big in midfield early and it works.
Any feedback is appreciated , cheers
Baguley is a 24 year old so he should be ready to go. He’s also very cheap so I can spend the cash elsewhere; I’m thinking sidebottom to franklin.
I still might trade Baguley out for someone else, it depends how he goes in the nab cup.
When I meant I might trade Sidebottom to Franklin, I meant after Howlett got downgraded to Curnow.

@ BiggieBigshot – Please don’t take this the wrong way. Personally i would swap Puopolo for another rookie, with the cash saved i would then upgrade one of Walsh, Kerridge, Pattison, Folau or Treloar. Your midfield is good but risky, i feel if Gazza gets an injury you won’t have many Captain choices, so maybe try to upgrade Sloane ( who has lots of potential ) to someone like Pendles, Swan, Boyd, etc. Hope i have helped you a little. Good luck for season.

I think I may need another premium defender but think I have got it covered in my forward line.
I am keeping an eye on Docherty’s injury over pre-season. He should be right to go round 1
I’m not sold on Saad but will watch him in the NAB Cup.
@ Biggie Bigshot
All in all don’t like it at all!!!
I count 5 premiums to start with, maybe 6 – Not Enough!!!
Carrazzo in the backline is an interesting choice.
As a Carlton supporter don’t think we will play both Carrazzo and Scotland.
Carrazzo may struggle this year.
Tim Mohr (GWS) is a Full Back – What are you doing picking a Full Back?
McIntosh is a worry – with Goldstein in the team – Goldstein is clearly Number 1 Ruck at North
@ Kiwizz
When u say u went big in the midfield last year and it works what do you mean by that.
Last year I started with 2 premium mids, came top 5k and won all my leagues.
Does that qualify as working or are u saying it works because you have a new car in the garage
Changed the team around now so it suits the byes a bit better (but I’ll still get some doughnuts).

Would really love opinions!
@ Bobby Dazzler
Last year i started with 5 premium’s in my mid , my reasoning is there is not as much depth especially in Fwd line to justify spending big money ( at the start ) on Fwd’s as they won’t score as big or as consistent as mid’s and I knew I wanted to bring these players in eventually , so why not start with them?? I know it’s risky and most of the cash cows come through the midfield, however I guess i’ll back myself to find them in the fwd line.
No car!! just top 400.
First go at a team in supercoach. here we go
Def- Deledio, Shaw, Suckling, Gram, Grimes, Wood, Ellis (Morris, Wilkes)
Mid- Ablett, A.Swallow, R.Griffen, Sloane, Coniglio, K.Stevens (D.Shiel, T.Mitcalell)
Ruck- McEvoy, Kreuzer ( J.Giles, T.Derickx)
For- D.Martin, R.Gray, S.Sidebottom, P.Dangerfield, J.Brown, T.Adams, A.Treloar (B.Smedts. S.Rowe)
50,800 lest over. Rookies will change as of the nab but it will be around this my final side. What you think and bad picks?
Fanks for the feedback Dulcify (nice name) and BobbyD!… will be doing a fair bit more work.. :)
Would welcome any feedback on this team.
Obviously all rookies will be watched during pre-season!!!
Goddard Deledio Shaw Suckling Grimes Lake Wilkes (Morris + Tynan)
Ablett Murphy Mundy Grigg MacDonald Shiel (Zorko + Mitchell)
Mumford Luenburger (Giles Stephenson)
Franklin Martin Zaharakis Brown Didak Treloar Clifton (Walsh + Elliott)
Just found out that Clifton is not DPP only a mid – so he’ll be swapped!!!!
Weighing up between Mummy and McEvoy – Mummy just at momment
And in the words of Malcom Blight – I don’t give a rats toss bag about the byes
Any major weaknesses or improvements there guys?
Also S. Gilbert and M. Talia or B. Waters and L. Spurr?
@ Sean08
Pavlich or Cloke?
Gut feel on this 1 says Pavlich – Although its documented that Pavlich will play mainly forward this year a close look at his stats suggest he gets more points up front than in the midfield.I also think Freo will have a better year than Collingwood!!!
Shuey or Howlett? I have to go Shuey on this 1 – surely more upside than Howlett
Goddard or Montagna? Goddard based on his DPP status but let me say this – Montagna is an absolute steal at that price!!!
Armstrong or Lake? Close call this 1 – I’ll be watching NAB Cup for Armstrongs role but if Lake is fit and plays the first 6-8 games you will make money!!!
Sidebottom/Rioli or Robinson? I’m biased here but to me Mitch Robinson is a superior SC player to Sidebottom and Rioli will definately pull his hamstring at some stage
Talia or Spurr(not good bye-wise)? Flip the Coin!!!
Birchall or Suckling? I’m asking the same question and so far have Suckling but wopuld be happy with Birchall. If Hawthorn have no injuries Birchall definately plays – Suckling can be replaced!!!
Smedts or Wilkes in the starting line-up? Definately Smedts – Hasn’t Wilkes been recruited to play FB – I can’t understand why he is so popular, also have DPP with Smedts
Also S. Gilbert and M. Talia or B. Waters and L. Spurr?Rookies I lean towards Talia and personally prefer Waters to Gilbert!!!
Hope at least 1 opinion may help you
@ Bobby Dazzler
Thanks heaps for that!!! It was very helpful, I will take most of your advise, but not all of it :P
Team now looks like this.
Def- Deledio, Shaw, Suckling, Gibert, Grimes, Wood, Ellis (Morris, Wilkes)
Mid- Ablett, A.Swallow, R.Griffen, Sloane, Coniglio, K.Stevens (D.Shiel, T.Mitcalell)
Ruck- McEvoy, Kreuzer ( J.Giles, T.Derickx)
For- D.Martin, R.Gray, S.Sidebottom, M.Lacras, J.Brown, T.Adams, A.Treloar (B.Smedts. S.Rowe)
With 36,400 left over. Any points would help me out :)
@ johno686 – That is a very unique squad you have picked, if Gazza gets a 3 week injury (touch wood) your choice of Captain is very limited. This is just my opinion, there really isn’t any other player in that squad that i would trust with the Captaincy, if this was my team. Apart from the Captaincy issue, overall your team looks good on paper, as i said, very unique, i would probably downgrade Grimes or Gilbert to Rookie, Coniglio to cheaper Rookie, upgrade Lacras, then swap Sloane for Swan or Pendles if you can afford them. Good luck for the season.
Just on another matter, what are people’s thought’s on Brian Lake?
I have a gut feeling that he may go forward, it would not surprise me, he has gone forward before and kicked goals, there is no BBBBHall and Lake could be a real surprise, also the emergence of Markovich at full back means where does Lake now fit in.
Any thought’s on this?
HI all, just wondering what you thought of my team so far:

Obviously rookies will change during NAB Cup, and will wait and see about the fitness of Fyfe. So other than those things, what do u all think?
@ Dulcify
“Just on another matter, what are people’s thought’s on Brian Lake?”
A fully fit Brian Lake best spot is in the backline.
At his price he is a steal if he plays in the back line, nearly the King of cheap possessions!!!He won’t be getting the cheapies in the Forward Line.
From a Forward Line point of view Brian Lake is a pinch hitter not a full timer.
Also from the new coach point, history would suggest that thet all build their team from the backline.
An absolute monty for my team if he gets thru pre-season.
99% sure he is still in the rehab group thou which isn’t a good start.
Here is the start of my team… concentrated on having a DP’s and a good spread across teams to cover byes. I also wanted to have a strong midfield at the start of the year and hopefully achieved that.

Very interesting team that 1, would be fair to say u won’t see a similar team!!!
Personally I think you are taking way too many risks. Some will no doubt pay off, but my guess would be the majority won’t.
You have no premiums in the backline -NONE
You have 4 premiums in the midfield and you stated that you were going strong at the start in the midfield – 4 Premiums isn’t strong!!!I estimate 25-30% of people will start with this strategy. One of your Premiums – Deledio should be in the backline allowing you to pick either another Premium or a midfield rookie that will increase more in prive than a back rookie!!!
In the Ruck you have 1 defenate Premium and Hamish McIntosh that could become a premium but is unfortunately up against one of the best things since sliced bread – Goldstein!!! Don’t hold ya breath on the Big H coz Goldstein is clearly the number 1 at North.
Forward Line 1 Premium – That means you are starting the year with 6 premiums.
Very very interesting strategy but I won’t be going with it!!!
@Bobby Dazzler
Thanks for the comments and this is totally different to the players i was thinking of a week ago and has used most of the salary cap ($14,000 remaining).
I have yet to review the team looking at which teams play each other in the first few rounds… will wait for the preseason form.
I would like to try and avoid any trades in the first few weeks so looking for players that are most likely to be consistantly picked which is where preseason will change the team.
